The optimal level of deficit is the level needed to support real outcomes: full employment; full use of available resources (and not beyond).

It's all about managing real resources - there's no need to look at the level of spending. Real resource use tells us what's needed.

One of my most enduring gripes. Politicians are told not to patronise voters. The most patronising approach is to nod along when they believe stuff that's not true, or encourage them

Taxes don't 'raise' anything in a monetarily sovereign fiat currency regime such as ours. £3bn of taxation is £3bn removed from the economy. What matters is the effect on the overall economy of the government's fiscal actions of spending money into existence and taxing it out of existence.
