We took a tour of the sacred Waipio Valley today. Access to the valley floor via the road is allowed for only Big Island residents and tour company operators and only in 4-wheel drive vehicles. It is the steepest road of its length in the US. What a beautiful day we had.

Just had to breathe for a few minutes and remind myself that everything’s going to be alright. It is, isn’t it?

Visited the Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary today and we feel so centered. Here are a couple of photos.

On our way out we were approached by two women in an SUV and informed that we were trespassing on private property. We told them that we were just leaving and admitted to ourselves that we are indeed scofflaws, but WTH? How is this site now on private property? It makes no sense. #livingintheUSA

Happy Halloween! We’re having a World Series party with a friend featuring Chinese food while we hand out trick-or-treat candy. All must end early so we can get up for an 8 am flight tomorrow. #Game6 #BeatLA

Last night we attended this solo show at a local theater that is based on his real-life experiences growing up in a racist suburb in the Bay Area. This deeply personal story explored race, identity, and belonging with heart, humor, and insight. It was very thought provoking and we loved it.

This seems like an overreaction...

But she should probably know that, unless the Niners are playing, I really only watch the Superbowl for the demonic halftime performances.

Today is Mexican Independence Day (El Grito), a holiday which means workers start at their normal work time and work a half day (until 1 or 2 pm) and then stay up half the night celebrating by shooting off fireworks before getting up for a normal work day tomorrow. We'll be watching the double MNF.

Tried a different bagel place this week with much better results. The owner of the restaurant is from Oakland, California, and also makes delicious pizza (another rarity in Mexico).

The game was rained out so we get to go back tomorrow at the same time. If they win the series is over. If they lose we can pop down to the box office and buy a ticket for the second game of a doubleheader. #lifeinMexico

Our art dealer stood us up for the second time so we got a wild hair and hung our latest piece in the living room without his help. We bought this one in Puerto Vallarta earlier in the year. #lifeinMexico #huicholart

The building being constructed next door to our apartment is going to block our view when it’s finished. There is new construction all over the city of Guadalajara. #lifeinMexico

Getting a bowlful of something we cannot get in Mexico before we leave - good pho. There’s a large contingent of Vietnamese/South Asians in Sacramento, so much so that freeway signs direct drivers to the “Little Saigon” neighborhood.
