the sweet spot with an abstract & bizarre choice is when you don't understand it at all, but it STILL hits you emotionally. i think it's really hard to pull off, but so exciting.

"wait, why did they do that?!" is one of the coolest reactions art can elicit. like the last moment in Blood Simple, just a guy staring up at a leaky pipe and looking shocked. it's almost a joke, but it's so striking? a little scary even?
