I agree.

For me, at first, Academia was very much an identity and a calling.

Years later, after some experience of terrible university management, it is "a job".

Some other reflections (which turned out to be about workload management, and ways of working)

Most basic neuroscience research in the U.S. is funded by the federal government, but there is an entire funding landscape that lies beyond those federal agencies. To bring those sources together, @thetransmitter.bsky.social presents a funding source directory: bit.ly/4pBBF2B

This paywalled article is full of “in my grandparents day, blah blah blah” and nasty sneery comments about latest iPhones for spoilt children🙄

for this absolute honor! Grateful to all I've worked with particularly mentors who've given such amazing examples, to brilliant mentees, & my friend for such kind words!
The work is the important thing & I'm so grateful we get to promote it this way!
Congratulations to Carlos Bolanos Guzman, Ph.D. and Jared Young, Ph. D. for being awarded the Dolores Shockley Advancement Award! 👏 #ACNP2026

If this GIF has ever brought you joy in the past, I humbly ask you to consider making a donation to the National MS Society. It would mean a lot to me and to those I know affected by the disease!

In reporting this piece on the new trial for a Huntington's treatment, I was struck by one thing in particular:

The joy.

One of my sources wept for joy. He has spent his entire career studying this disease, he said it was the happiest day. www.sciencenews.org/article/hunt...
Huntington's progression slowed by experimental gene therapy
An experimental gene therapy slowed Huntington’s by up to 75 percent in a small clinical trial. While not a cure, it may give patients longer lives.
