They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Stanley Baldwin said in 1932 "The Bomber Will Always Get Through" as part of a panic that swept Europe & the US from the late 1920s on about huge civilian casualties; in 1937 the British govt estimated 600,000 dead and 1.2m wounded in the first 60 days of a new conflict...fortunatley they were wrong

From 1943 100 Group of Bomber Command created "Moskito Panik" amongst Luftwaffe night fighters, flying intruder missions to hunt the hunters. They claimed 258 kills in 1944/45. Such was the fear in Nachjadger fliers their accident rates were well north of 50% in 1944.

Hurricane II's in produciton, Slough c.1943. In 1936 the UK began building shadow factories to boost produciton numbers and take over in the event main line factories were destroyed. The scheme proved difficult initally but became a vital part of the war effort.

The SOE, aka the Baker Street Irregulars, was tasked by Churchill to set Europe ablaze in 1940. Mostly what they did was get tortured to death. N (Dutch) Section was basically run by the Abwher until the end of 1943, F (French) Section

@royalhampsmuseum.bsky.social had a rather fun morning yesterday at the Museum, noseying around the exhibition, and found a story I had no idea about....450 miles on foot through enemy territory....

Lack of Moral Fibre (LMF) was the RAF's term for men who had 'lost the confidence of their commanding officer to face the dangers required of them' irrespective of the trauma a man might have gone through. Fascinating and horrifying in equal parts.

Hitler, Stalin and now Putin have armoured trains...in Britain we don't go in for that sort of nonsense. Behold the mighty Rommney & Hyde miniature railway in 1940

The Norden Bombsight aka the M-9 (Army) or Mark XV (Navy) was a radical concept capable, according to the testing data, of a CEP of 150ft. Unfortunately that testing data was deeply flawed and possibly fraudulent

RAF 101 Squardon suffered the most casulaties of any Bomber Command squadron during the war. 1,094 crewmen were killed, 178 captured, and 171 aircraft destroyed. This came from a strength at any given time of 18 aircraft and 146 men, in other words it was wiped out 11 times

Lack of Moral Fibre or LMF was a quasi disciplinary term used to categorise men who refused to fly in the RAF during WW2. Although often associated with Bomber Command of the 2762 cases of LMF between its creation in 1940 to 1945 just 30% were bomber aircrew

Although the RAF mostly bombed by night, from June 1944 to the end of the war they launched intermittent daylight raids, both in support of ground operations and as part of the strategic bombing campaign. I *think* this was taken on a strike on Cannes in July 1944

In a tiny village in Tuscany, up in the hills near a small town called Montalcino, this memorial is on the wall of the church. 3 sets of brothers, 28 men dead, all privates bar 3 NCOs, from a village of maybe 200. And no one remembers the endless battles of the Isonzo now.

The fuck are we doing? We created "On the Run" letters for IRA/UDA/UVF murderers, why are we prosecuting only the soldiers? It's bonkers. Apply the rule of law, or do not.

I lost the argument for free speech in the early 2000s thanks to internet racists and pearl clutching liberals but f me. Had to verify my age because this image is mature content. This is an He111 flown by Nazis trying to wipe out a democracy. Fucking MPs, this is how you kill memory.
