I really enjoyed this conversation on INDIGNITY with David for @ppfideas.bsky.social - it is even better if you listen to the whole series (previous two episodes were on philosophical and then legal/political interpretations of dignity)!

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!

Today David talks to @leaypi.bsky.social about her new book 'Indignity: A Life Reimagined'. A conversation about death and displacement, identity and betrayal, secrecy and salvation.

Over last 12 months Times&Telegraph have published nearly 1 article a day on the VAT changes for private schools!
But in spite of the uproar, the policy has not weakened the power of Britain’s most elite schools. @aaronreeves.bsky.social & @samfriedman.bsky.social suggest what might actually do it.
Taxing private schools won’t smash the class ceiling - British Politics and Policy at LSE
Labour's abolition of VAT on private schools is mostly sympbolic. Its mission of "smashing the class ceiling" needs to focus on elite university admissions next.

"Addressing real psychological & sociological needs is something those false, misinformed beliefs are doing. We actually need to try to tackle the underlying social problems, like alienation, people are grappling with"

One of the most thought-provoking films our "AI, technology and society" series. Have you watched it yet?
My take away - we shouldn't make the mistake of anthropomorphising AI. If it's sentient, it will be a type of consciousness we have never seen before.
birchlse.bsky.social
I'm a "centrist" about AI sentience. I take two risks seriously: the risk of creating a new kind of sentient being, and the risk of millions of users misattributing sentience to chatbots on the basis of mimicry and role-playing. LSE invited me to explain in 5 minutes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg8v...
