💡Takeaway: both design and price matter! Manufacturers should continue to iterate on HWF designs with emphasis on reducing costs.

🙌 Thanks to co-authors Katayi Mwila-Kazimbaya, Mwamba Mwenge, Elisabeth Tadiri, Jenala Chipungu, @rdreibe.bsky.social

New paper out in @plosglobalpublichealth.org from EHG PhD student @elliedelight.bsky.social exploring how gender, perceptions of disease severity, and behaviours shape zoonotic spillover risk in urban Brazil.

Excited to share our new research exploring gender and environmental health in four flood-prone communities in Salvador, Brazil. The study examines exposure pathways to leptospirosis through perceptions of disease and high-risk behaviours, using a sex-disaggregated and causally informed approach.
Gender differences in Leptospira exposure risk, perceptions of disease severity, and high-risk behaviours in Salvador, Brazil: A cross-sectional study
Vulnerability to climate hazards and infectious diseases is not gender-neutral, meaning that men, women, and other gender identities experience different risks. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic climate-sen...

Pools are a great way to cool off and get exercise.

While the benefits often outweigh the risks, pools have been linked to outbreaks of GI illness. Crypto is a common culprit given how long it can hang out in chlorinated water. Read more below!

How hygienic are public swimming pools really?

In BBC Future, @jackieknee.bsky.social discusses waterborne infectious disease outbreaks & the presence of bacteria & #parasites in swimming pools like #cryptosporidium, which is tolerant to chlorine.

Excellent presentation today by @elliedelight.bsky.social to researchers at the Institute of Collective Health (Federal University of Bahia, Brazil) on her PhD studying vulnerability to environmentally persistent zoonoses ('ZAPs' in Portuguese!) during flooding events.

Excited to share our research! The study explores how data systems and economics can improve pandemic preparedness for climate-sensitive infectious diseases. Our review revealed gaps related to data interoperability and gender considerations, posing challenges to effective and equitable responses.
Gaps and opportunities for data systems and economics to support priority setting for climate-sensitive infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa: A rapid scoping review
Climate change alters risks associated with climate-sensitive infectious diseases (CSIDs) with pandemic potential. This poses additional threats to already vulnerable populations, further amplified by...

In this week's EHG seminar, Prof. Cleber Cremonese (UFBA) presented on an ongoing collaboration with EHG.

The project evaluates how condominial sewerage reduces transmission of zoonoses (e.g. leptospirosis) and arboviruses in marginalised communities in Salvador, Northeast Brazil.
