Honestly, I don't think release order matters much. I'd recommend playing the Prime trilogy in order, but that's not necessary, either.

I honestly enjoyed Metroid 1, although it's heavily outdated. Metroid 2 is kinda similar, but on even more restrictive hardware. Prime Hunters and Federation Force
