Obviously retaining Marsh would be better, but this does open up a lot of possibilities for MSU’s future roster with not having to spend 7 figures on 1 wide receiver

And yes, there are financial reasons here, and no, they have nothing to do with MSU not being able to afford him, but I don’t think that’s the main thing here

Per NET, the only truly bad Big Ten teams are Minnesota (144), Rutgers (186), Oregon (192), and Maryland (200). All other Big Ten teams are currently top 100.

MSU plays each of these bad teams once, with the exception of Rutgers, who they play twice.

The Big Ten currently has 12 top 75 NET teams, with UCLA knocking on the door at 76. Top 75 NET wins equate to Q1 road wins, and Q2 home wins.

The Big Ten currently has 8 top 30 NET teams. If that holds, there will be ample opportunity for home Q1 wins in the Big Ten.

I like Maryland’s QB, but that was not a very good second half showing by the defense, I agree

You could be the greatest DC in the world, but if your best pass rusher finishes the year with 2.5 sacks your defense will not function. I’ve seen enough that I would be ok with a 1-year audition under a coach that has actual financial backing for a real roster. He’s not the top of my list though

Ok. To be clear tuition and athletics spending are not related. If we can’t agree on basic facts I don’t think this is a fruitful conversation

U Chicago was just an example that athletics has nothing to do with tuition increases. I chose U Chicago because they are a founding member of the Big Ten
November 30, 2025 at 8:50 PM
I don’t think those things are related. Tuition keeps rising at U Chicago too and they cut D1 sports like 60 years ago

I think the entirety of the situation of him leaving his last job is difficult to discuss with nuance in short form like this. The eventual outcome was him suing NU for wrongful termination and NU settling. But it’s a complicated situation. Again, this is not the hire I would make
November 30, 2025 at 8:37 PM
The athletic budget is entirely separate from the university budget
November 30, 2025 at 8:33 PM
It’s not the hire I would make. But we had to make a change. I’m going to give the next guy a chance to succeed or fail on his own merit before I get upset about it though

He’s not the top of my list, but it seems like he’s the top of J Batt’s. I don’t think it’s the most likely outcome, but he could win here
