It’s wild that the govt is going to give tech firms a massive fair-use get-out clause in a country where it remains illegal for a consumer to rip a CD they bought to MP3.

They're a sync service, they are not designed to replace a true backup. iCloud Backup is better than nothing but that only works for files in iCloud Drive.

You need to send your iMac to a Data Recovery Specialist. Very good chance of recovering your novel. Happy to recommend one, no affiliation. And then get a proper backup solution. Neither Dropbox nor iCloud are suitable.
