I’m not American or in America.
I guess I’ve said all I had to say at this point - I hope you will reconsider!
machine-records.bsky.social
I think you’re saying that there’s a newer American meaning of “racism“ that has become more widespread recently that you dislike as it isn’t applicable to the rest of the world. You also seem to want to reduce racism to prejudice & make room for the idea that white people can experience racism.
machine-records.bsky.social
I’m not sure how you have come to that conclusion. The origins of racism were Anglo-American/ European at at time when Britain ruled half the world & other European counties had extensive colonial dominions. these nations have had a huge impact worldwide in all kinds of ways due to colonialism.

That’s your perogative I guess. As I grow older, I have realised that a lot of what I was taught or took for granted as a kid was just not true, and it was also a long time ago. There were literally billion people born since I was for whom some of these things that seem right to me were never true!
machine-records.bsky.social
I don’t think it’s inconsistent- the experience of the Irish shows clearly how ideas of race were invented and used to wield colonial power, and how the definition of whiteness has changed over time to suit those in power. I agree race in America is not the whole story though.
machine-records.bsky.social
To me defining racism as the same as prejudice erases the recent and murderous history of racism, which is important to understand as it continues to shape our world for the worse.

I mean, not everywhere! You are right there‘s 2 main meanings and they are in tension. That comes through in this entry where the 2 meanings keep coming up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism#....

I’d say that the US use, while different to what I learned growing up, reflects history better.
Racism - Wikipedia

Noting that this is precisely why the far right are trying to spread their “Great Replacement” theory - it’s a claim that systematic white oppression exists, which in their minds would justify the idea that they experience racism from non-white people.
machine-records.bsky.social
When you put it in its context then it is fair to say that white people don’t experience racism. That’s not to say they don’t experience ignorance, prejudice, stereotyping, oppression etc. But who espouses a doctrine that white people are inherently an inferior race?
machine-records.bsky.social
So my take is that prejudice and conflict are certainly universal, but racism - despite what I was taught growing up, which was that it was a form of ignorance or prejudice - is actually a more specific and modern belief system or doctrine. This is its original meaning, not a new one.
machine-records.bsky.social
I agree that American discussions on this seem very insular - as if the rest of the world didn’t exist.

But I also think we’ve all been brought up to think racism is universal and almost natural whereas the historical record shows a very different story.
machine-records.bsky.social
And then, toward the end, how these bogus concepts of race were exported to other parts of the world.

It is a bit long sorry!
machine-records.bsky.social
From the section on the Enlightment on it is very useful on how Europeans invented new pseudo-scientific concepts of race and racism to justify colonialism and slavery. Prejudice may be as old as humankind, but racism is very modern.
