I spell duel whenever I get the chance. Have had some pretty epic moments

Not in Kansas anymore works pretty well. It gives you a chance at experiencing leveled play, too. Hole in the Sky is more straightforward than Sailors, and better suited for a con.

Who needs Prince Adam?

Yup. The first few issues are straight MCC! Barbarian hero is gifted ancient tech that makes him super strong and has a force field? C’mon!

I can’t get over how perfect it is.

The expert set is my favorite RPG art, ever.

I would (the suggestion was hit points, which I think works better for Shadowdark). I have never played a magic user or priest in SD who effectively cast spells. A mechanic to get them back via Spellburn or to add to a spell check would be welcome.

But as a DCC fan I should know how people build parasocial relationships with their favorite games and criticizing design choices is almost like a personal attack.

I actually like Vancian magic more because very few spells will have no effect. I mentioned how relying on the Shadowdark luck mechanic isn’t helpful, because it’s not player facing and requires the DM to remember to give out luck tokens. I used DCC as an example of how to make meaningful choices.

To be fair, he didn’t literally call me a noob but the response was condescending enough to take it that way. We were talking about magic in Shadowdark and how I like a proposed spellburn mechanic. It’s been my experience that magic users aren’t very fun and often “do nothing” on their turn.

I really like one roll combats when they’re done well. I think the key is having margins of success for wounds, equipment loss, etc and not a binary “you live/you die.”

It runs so easy that I can’t think of any tips. I’m just trying to come up with some adventure hooks now (or find good, published S&S adventures)
