May not be literal. Once when I met a friend of my brother, we got along well and had a long chat alone, after which my brother made pretty much exactly this joke. Tasteless but normal dudebro ribbing.

It's not shocking to me that some people might lag a few days in learning about major news if they don't actively consume it. I would *hope*, though, that it will be common knowledge within, say, a week.
