297, unfortunately... amazing afternoon with Spotted Sandpiper, Hoopoe, and American Pipit all showing at point blank range! Off to St Mary's for a Rosy Starling I hope!

Mind-blowing views of the Mourning Dove on St Agnes with Andy Stockhausen, Owen Parsons and a host of others. #ukbirding #birds

Glow in the dark feet... well done, what a bird!

I have worn it with a rucksack of various sizes, but I've felt a couple of times that straps get tangled, especially when wearing layers in colder weather. The quick release for the camera from the shoulder strap is useful though if it does feel tangled up.

#BirdOfTheDay is seabirds, so here's a Laughing Gull in Cornwall, England, a very long way from home earlier this year.
A Laughing Gull in summer plumage in flight creating a loose right angle with its wings. It has a piece of bread in its dark red beak. The Laughing Gull looking contemplative, showing the crisp white eye crescents in its full dark hood.

Well done on the photo in windy conditions! Hoping this stays put for me tomorrow.

3 hours at Rossall Point and a further 2 at New Brighton and I *still* haven't seen a Leach's Petrel. Autumn 2025 has quickly become my most dull autumn of birding in memory. Little Gull and an Arctic Skua rescued what would otherwise have been a largely fruitless day. #ukbirding #birds
Little Gull in winter plumage flying in very strong onshore winds. The black underwing is visible as the bird banks in the air.

Anderson more dynamic and direct for me, Wharton happy to pull strings from deep. More options is always good. Could do with a game where we drop Kane, see who else can do a job up top.

Wharton reads the game better than any other player I've seen in the flesh, even at Rovers in a poor team. Great for a team that wants to transition quickly from defence to attack, so he's probably best against high quality international opponents rather than 10 men behind the ball teams.

Curious how birds find their way? 🧭🐦
Analyze decades of ringing data to study abnormal migratory routes and uncover what these deviations can reveal about the mechanisms guiding birds on their journeys. Drop me an email for details! #ornithology

That must have been amazing - well done on the find! I'm not going to waste too much time on the arcane guesswork of the people who decide if we're allowed to count a bird this good - I'm just going to enjoy it. Thank you for putting the news out!

Yup. I don't actually think it's come from MM, but it's likely to end up there on the main Mere like the snow and red breasted geese that come in always do, being fed like the Whoopers simply because that makes sense for any bird, and sadly that would almost always mean non-acceptance.

Slightly better photos (only slightly) of the unringed (😄) Ross's Goose at Marshside. Hopefully wild, but if not, simply a great bird in Lancashire. #UKbirding #birds

Not convinced that sitting with Canada Geese, 10 metres from a black swan and 35 from two bar-headed geese, with Martin Mere 4 miles away is going to cut it for the powers that be to accept it, but honestly I don't care about that. Great bird in a place I love.

Back of camera shot of the Ross's Goose at Marshside this afternoon. No idea of provenance, but a beauty of a bird either way. #ukbirding #birds

Interesting (and great) to note that though I post all my blogs under #ukbirding, over 60% of those reading it are (accessing it) from North America. Readership has also doubled across the last month - thank you to everyone for reposts. Latest blog below. #birds
Marsh Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope and Siberian Stonechat - being strong when we're weak
This is a photo of one of the dozen Marsh Sandpipers I saw in Pont du Gau in the South of France in July 2024 to replace the lost photos fro...

Yes, just a quirk of my experience that all Grey Phalaropes have been close encounters and all Red-necked have been at 300m.

Thank you for your kind words Debbie - you're always a hugely encouraging presence here. I think a lot of people feel like that more often than we suspect, and there's definitely support out there if we're open to it.

Thank you! I know almost nothing about fungi but absolutely love finding different types!
