Getting a touch of Stendahl syndrome looking at this particular painting
🧵 Edgar Ende (1901-65) was a German Surrealist who is barely known outside that country, but unlike many of the surrealists actually painted from his subconscious - rather than carefully creating fabricated imaginings. Thus his work has authenticity & is mesmerising [1]

An incredibly satisfying article. I appreciate the GAA does a lot of good work but I cannot stand the sanctimony and hubris that so often accompanies the organisation.
GAA exceptionalism has definitely been due a peg-lowering.

The phrase "centrist rugby Dad" speaks to a fantasy where GAA is this benignly egalitarian, progressive and welcoming space. This is not everyone's experience but good luck to them if they say so.

Malachy Clerkin: The Jim Gavin fiasco was a long overdue humbling for GAA exceptionalism
Micheál Martin had his head turned by Gavin’s football success, forgetting it’s just a sport, no better or worse than the rest

Maybe a whitewasher of imperialist Russian aggression in the Áras, similar to Clare Daly, is exactly what Ireland needs to wean itself off Kremlin propaganda.

This is at its worst when you look up a restaurant and cannot find a menu.
You know what I miss? Websites. Easy to navigate, with all the info in one place. They're vanishing, being replaced by Instagram (pretty pics that tell you NOTHING), Tik-Tok, FB, etc. Times are stressful, just give me your hours, rates, product info, product, etc. please don't drain my brain more.

Pet parrots which typically live alone (whilst those in the wild live in large flocks) were given the technology to call each other. They would use it for up to three hours a day, and developed favourite friends 💔

Lovely to hear Melvyn Bragg talking about the big idea behind "In Our Time": to get academics on the air, talking about the subjects they were most passionate & knowledgeable about, without worrying about whether they had "media training".

It's remarkable that this was (& remains) such an odd idea!

I’ve yet to see an image of Italy used in similar circumstances where they include the island of Corsica yet many of our neighbours seem to be either profoundly ignorant of the borders of their own country or subject to Russian style ambitions for re-expansion.
"The truly unnerving thing about the fall of Rome (yes, I’m going there again, sorry) was that most Romans probably didn’t notice it had happened."

Catherine Connolly may be basically a well-meaning person who has good positions on various things, but she has showed very poor judgement in important situations and doesn't seem to have learned from her mistakes or pulled away from those people or positions
I have now learned who Catherine Connolly supported for President in 2018...
The answer to this is YES. Yes, we should be worried about Catherine Connolly being one leg of a triad with Mick Wallace and Claire Daly.

Catherine Connolly says “the Ukraine” in every speech on the war. She opposes Ireland providing Ukraine paltry combat medic and de-mining training, and objects to all EU arms funding for Ukraine.

She took part in a PR blitz for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, but wouldn’t clap for Zelenskyy in the Dáil.

Hungary received €70.47 billion from the EU between 2004 and 2020, while contributing only €14.83 billion in the same period. Yet Orbán’s regime has consistently denigrated European values and undermined the very Europe that kept on bankrolling his country. Enough is enough.
