So I got PS+ premium during the sale and I picked up some games I wanted to try. The PS1 Resident Evils, the Sly Cooper Trilogy, Jak 1, Daxter PSP and some more games. If I can in the future, I'll properly pay for the ones that intrigued me the most. Though for others, I want to tackle a certain way

If I had a nickel for every time a platformer franchise gets a multiplayer mobile game with the word Rumble in the title, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. Even more so, with those said platformer franchises being Sonic the Hedgehog and Ratchet and Clank.

I visited the retro store yesterday to see what's been changed. Some systems got sold, including the $600 Turbografx 16. Some systems were brought in like a GBA SP and DS Lite and Holy Virtual Boy game that's never going to be re-released under dumb circumstances it's Panic Bomber! 2 copies of it!

Seems like a one-way trip to eternal toilet trouble.

I'm shocked that it took until Sonic Racing Crossworlds to get a Sonic Racing game with a big modding scene. And it can't just be because it's an Unreal Engine game. Sonic fans are willing to learn many old & new internal engines to mod any game on Steam a LOT. What's different about Sumo Digital's?

Am I saying that there won't be DS NSO? Not really. There is a high demand & the Switch 2 can do it very well. Just expect any of the compromises I brought up that you can't be too upset over to happen & you must either deal with them or fork over a lot to test your Nintendo DS loyalty. We'll see.
October 7, 2025 at 9:56 PM
Just because it isn't as ridiculous as a $100 required plastic shell to play games from a system you likely never cared for to begin with doesn't mean this pill is any easier to swallow. In fact, it's arguably harder because you already know what to expect with DS on the TV & how to deal with that.

I know what you're about to say. "Why don't we just get a touch screen accessory that can not only plug into the Switch 2 to mimic the DS style but can also be used as a remote 2nd screen to play DS games on a TV uncompromised like the Wii U? I'd buy it." This is a sensible option... but be honest.

The second workaround is using the mouse mode of the joycons. Much faster & more precise while still being easy to transition in & out of like a touch screen. Better than sticks but just like them, still a compromise. This time due to the cursor staying as you lift the mouse. Making flicking a pain.
October 7, 2025 at 9:56 PM
It's the Switch 2. Its main appeal like the first is playing games both portably & on the TV & being forced to only one of those modes to play DS games, especially when the Wii U kind of did both, isn't gonna cut it. So TV play is a must & workarounds are needed to do it as smoothly as possible.

Nintendo was able to get DS emulation near perfect with the Wii U, but like I said, it failed & its unlikely they'll ever re-release a gamepad-like controller as a system essential ever again. But now, with the massive success of the Switch & Switch 2 & NSO having every system + Genesis before DS...

The newly revealed Megaman Star Force Legacy Collection has some gameplay footage showing how Capcom will handle the dual screen nature of the games & it's interesting. There's a layout that dynamically changes screen sizes to prioritize what screen you want with button support for the touch screen

Dawn of Sorrow has a magic seal system that requires the touch screen to use & in the Dominus collection version, you can not only use the cursor to connect to dots but also use button shortcuts to speed it up. The Switch has a handheld touch screen & PC has a mouse, but they're system based extras.
October 7, 2025 at 9:56 PM
2 workarounds I've seen are in the Castlevania Dominus collection, where you can use the right stick to move a cursor and hold a button to trigger a touch screen input. It's a workaround that is a compromise, but it works for the multi-plat release. There's also Dawn of Sorrow's magical seal system.

But the Wii U bombed & nobody in their right mind is going to make a controller with a large touch screen a necessity for a video game console ever again. So when it comes to re-releasing DS games after the Wii U Era, more specifically 3rd parties who want to do it, they had to do some workarounds.

The only console to perfectly translate the DS's features to the TV was the Wii U due to the gamepad. A touch screen that functions similarly to the DS's with a stylus, various display options that work for different kinds of games & a built-in microphone. No multiplayer support tho, but still good.

🧵
The reveal of Virtual Boy NSO & the requirement of an accessory to play its games has brought me back to the topic of DS games being difficult to re-release uncompromised without an accessory. For Virtual Boy, people are willing to trade 3D for more comfortable TV play. But docked DS isn't easy.
