This is likely the last of this book series. I plan to use a spray matte varnish to fix the ink and fabric. #watercolor #markkaufman #book

Alice is done. A very determined young lady. I suppose she’s headed to the demonstration against ICE.

The next stage. A bit less vampiric face. Tough to make modification with watercolor. Now her identity is betrayed by the text. It’s -–\\\\\

Next step. Her identity which nominally continues to be a secret is, nonetheless, becoming clearer.

First two stages of this young lady who will be stepping out of a book. You can probably guess who she is, but I am not telling? Any ideas? She’s quite determined. #watercolor #markkaufman #blondeyounglady

The second in this short series of a figure emerging from an old book. One more planned.

Alice emerges from the book. First time I used collage, the text printed on fabric. #aliceinwonderland #watercolor #markkaufman

Jean says it’s sad. I just went with the mood without defining it in my mind. This is the third on the theme and the first of which I like. It seems to me that art involves a certain tolerance for mixed results. What do you think it portrays in this odd portrait.

Done finally

She’s almost done. Lacks the head of Holophernes. A heroine, but also satisfying as someone who in a mythical single stroke of her blade solved a massive problem that led the elders of the city to talk of surrender. Never quit. Never surrender. Of course, the world doesn’t work that way.

Added some background and enhanced the helmet. #markkaufman #watercolor#judith

Added some gold leaf to the image.

I had started this one early in the week. It ended up that the right shoulder was too high, the dress obscured the pose unacceptably and the helmet was confusing. Into the trash it went
This is variation on Judith. #beginningofwatercolor #watercolor#markkaufman #judithslaysholophernes

The starting steps of an elaborate dress and the wearer standing in a picture frame.

Here’s the finished product. Drama and simplicity was the aim. I think it successful.

Stage 2 of seated woman in red brimmed hat. I think the drama I hoped to create is working. #watercolor #womeninart #markkaufman

Working on simplicity and drama as a break, at least, from musicians and more complexity. #watercolor #woman #redbrimmedhat #markkaufman.

Finished image of two musicians in the French Quarter. #watercolor #markkaufman #musicians.

Musician no. 2 starts to emerge. Banjo player. #watercolor #jazz #markkaufman

I am continuing a series of jazz players. Here is the first face. I am pleased. Always risky posting pictures as a painting develops as at any stage it can go south. #watercolor #jazz #musician #markkaufman

The finished image despite being out of sorts today.

Today’s addition. Using a largish brush leads to a loser style.
August 21, 2025 at 7:10 PM
The suit is now done. That finishes yesterday’s painting. Using a fairly large round brush for this one and a certain amount of wet on wet. It creates a looser style than I often use. #watercolor #neworleans #jazz #markkaufman #paintinginsteps
