Manifesting a first/business class upgrade @british-airways.bsky.social , since my 4yo drew me laying down on my flight to Japan! 🇯🇵✈️😎

Love the detail of the Japanese flag on the airplane tail!

It’s marking season again 😩 trying to avoid using sugar as a reward/motivation, and instead stole this visual timer from my son. Works a charm with him to move on to help him move on to the next activity (usually bedtime!)… and it turns out it works a charm on me too! I’m on a roll!
Desk setup with a visual timer set at approximately 15 minutes, placed on a cork surface. A partially visible laptop screen is on the left side.

Merry Christmas! 🎄

Hope your day is filled with pjs, roasties, cosy films, and Lego! Or you know, whatever tickles your fancy 😉

My 4-year-old built this “alien who works at a university”. I’m hoping it’s here to take over my marking!
The image depicts a small LEGO creation, primarily blue, featuring a vertical stack of bricks with light blue and dark blue stripes. The build has wing-like extensions on either side and two upright rods on the top. It is set against a cosy indoor background, with a Christmas tree adorned with lights and ornaments visible in the distance. The foreground includes festive holly-patterned pyjamas.

I forgot to say, it was @dbpharrison.bsky.social ideas! I thought students would find it lame but they were smiling and laughing so maybe not…? 😅
martacecchinato.bsky.social
Did it take me more than it should have to make this review? Absolutely. I probably should have started marking in that time, but it was fun. And I'll try to keep this up every year if I can.

Overall, some of these numbers surprised me and made me look at the module in a slightly different light. Was it all positive? No, plenty of people didn't engage, but I wanted it to be a positive reflection for those who had been attending and engaging.

I must have repeated this sentence a million times... "you are not the user". Let's see how many WEIRD personas I get this year...
A slide with a red gradient background. The text reads: ‘You are not the user… but your role is critical.’ At the bottom, the quote: ‘This is bigger than you, and you are not me’ from R.E.M. – Losing My Religion is displayed.

This year the assessment was all about Future of work. Students had to pick one of 4 challenges to design for and research:

1. worker-centred gig economy
2. inclusive work environments for neurodiversity
3. managing work-life balance for working students
4. designing transparent & ethical bossware
A slide with a bright yellow background and pink abstract shapes. The title reads: ‘Your top choices.’ Four images are listed with percentages: 41% (Work-Life Balance), 21% (Gig Economy), 21% (Neurodiverse Workplaces), and 17% (Ethical Bossware).

Last year the module feedback said my lectures needed to be more engaging. So every week I've included a Mentimeter quizzing them on previous lectures, debating topics, or getting them to reflect on their assumptions:

Shoutout to Simone Strumpf, & Margaret Burnett's (et al.) GenderMag resources!
A slide with a black and yellow gradient background. The title reads: ‘Your most engaged moments.’ Below it lists: ‘1. Stages in the UCD process – most answered Mentimeter question (week 2), 2. Speak up or go along? – most divisive ethical dilemma (week 4), 3. What features avoid bias when creating more inclusive personas? – most wrong Mentimeter answer given (week 7).’
martacecchinato.bsky.social
This student also gave me some really lovely feedback:

"...Following the slides, the points that are made and the general QoL additions that you have put in (one free paper, then going through each and the heaps of additional tips) are truly helpful and quite a breath of fresh air."
A slide with a pink and red wavy gradient background. The text reads: ‘And another one of you had a lot of good questions to ask, sending 13 emails alone.’ At the bottom, the quote: ‘Tell me more, tell me more’ from Grease – Summer Nights is displayed.
martacecchinato.bsky.social
Students thought I would have received more emails from them. I don't have data from previous years to compare, but I do think we received more in the past.... maybe my explanations are better now? 😜
A slide with a purple gradient background. The text reads: ‘You have sent 44 emails asking engaged questions and giving valuable feedback. That is 2% of the emails I received since the start of this semester.’ At the bottom, the quote: ‘Hello from the other side, I must have called a thousand times’ from Adele – Hello is displayed.
martacecchinato.bsky.social
No surprises here for week 1 attendance, but week 3 was all about doing literature reviews. I want to give a shout out to Leysia Palen who shared her approach to annotated literature with me last year and students absolutely loved it! Highest reading rates ever!
A slide with a black background and blue gradient shapes. The title reads: ‘Your favorite module content.’ Below it lists: ‘1. Week 1 lecture – most attended, 2. Week 3 lecture – most viewed on Panopto, 3. Williams et al. (2023) paper – most read and annotated on Talis Elevate.’
