i am not a native speaker myself but i'd say that things that were either already 連綿詞 ('unsplittable pseudocompounds', like 葡萄) in chinese or that have characters so obscure they're often just written phonetically anyways (てんかん 'epilepsy' and its horrible sinographs <癲癇> come to mind) are one (...)
