“Every time they go out on the street, meet with the DA, don’t meet with the DA, or make statements in public, they are broadcasting a political stance.”
Pishko added that law enforcement agencies, whether they acknowledge it or not, operate in political spaces. “At this point, I think it’s fair to say that all law enforcement are political entities,” she said.
This is a terrific article by Clint Combs which speaks to the data and the political context of law enforcement opposition. Thanks @jesspish.bsky.social for your insights.
What is Copaganda and how has it harmed our ability to have real public safety? Why do so many democrats promote it even though it’s contrary to the values democrats purportedly agree with? Check out episode #7 of “We Don’t Have to Choose,” featuring Alec Karakatsanis.
She believes the new policy will help law enforcement prioritize more serious public safety concerns at a time when many departments are understaffed and overextended.
Moriarty emphasized that data consistently shows pretext stops disproportionately target Black and brown drivers without significantly contributing to crime reduction.
GOOD PEOPLE: Come to this book talk on Mon. at Moon Palace w/Copaganda author @equalityalec.bsky.social and Mary Moriarty. You can grab a copy there if you haven't already!
Also...I will be "moderating" the conversation, which I am incredibly excited to do!
THREAD. This week, I'm doing Copaganda events in Minneapolis, Madison, and Milwaukee about the role of elite institutions--media, Democrats, universities, nonprofits--in the great problems of our time. And what we can do about it together.
I had a great time this morning talking to Freddie Bell about Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) and our Non-Public Safety Traffic Stop Policy. Check it out!
I am thrilled that Molly will moderate this discussion with Alec. If you read, “Copaganda,” or hear Alec talk, you will recognize so much of media coverage and establishment talking points here in Minneapolis and elsewhere.

During this press conference they said they got 147 guns from traffic stops in over 93,000 stops. Later corrected to over 100,000 stops. The failure rate is over 99%. pre- COVID MPD found a gun in less than half of 1%. Their data underperforms MPD.

This episode of We Don’t Have to Choose with Mary Moriarty features civil rights attorney Alec Karakatsanis. Alec talks about his new book, “Copaganda.”
This is a brilliant book by Alec Karakatsanis. So much of what we are inundated with about public safety is explained accurately. Check out my podcast interview with Alec on #7 of “We Don’t Have to Choose,” or come see him in person next Monday at Moon Palace Books at 6.
“Even when traffic accident rates were the same in different neighborhoods, MPD initiated a larger number of stops for minor reasons in neighborhoods with fewer white people.”
“The DOJ’s findings establish that Minneapolis traffic stops were not based on the number of accidents in an area, but were instead tied to the number of Black and brown residents who lived there.” www.startribune.com/mary-moriart...
“It seems like they go wrong for people of color,” she said of non-public safety traffic stops. “It’s devastating and deadly when it comes to people of color, and it’s no exaggeration.”
Valerie Castile said the policy is needed, and said traffic stops can be traumatic and even deadly, like the stop that led to her son’s death. She said her son was routinely pulled over for minor infractions.
Amy Hockert on @fox9mn.bsky.social did a great long interview with @marymoriarty.bsky.social. After Emmer used her as talking point, good forum for for her to explain rationale & thinking behind policies & more. Some very thoughtful answers to not so easy questions. Hope YouTube has soon.
After years of studying the data with law enforcement and the public, he said, it was shown that “public safety was not negatively impacted at all” in Ramsey County.
Joining Moriarty on Wednesday was Ramsey County Attorney John Choi, who instituted a nearly identical policy change in 2021 and said it was the most criticized decision of his career.
Moriarty, meanwhile, presented data that shows gun and drug charges stemming from traffic stops are rare. In a release, her office said that in all Minneapolis police equipment and moving violations in 2017 and 2018, a gun was recovered less than 0.5% of the time.
