Displaced Devonian in Yorkshire, ageing goth who yawns a lot (2 sleep disorders and chronic fatigue). Never been a "real man" so a little bit NB, here for the SF, history, science and friends

Icon from Doomtown, best card game ever made
I miss Screaming Lord Sutch, the modern Loony Party sometimes has actual policies, misses the point entirely

The number of brambles and elderberries that just sit and rot locally is depressing in a way, population dense area no one touches them

Lost arts

The only reason I know it properly exists is reading their style guide a few years ago, they've required it forever but it's rarely that blatant

Spelling it on phone is impossible tho-it was cooperative I saw it on, diathingy on the second o

I saw one today

And it was that got him expelled wasn't it?

My brief time living in London my landlady was a lovely retired nurse who'd bought decades previously and now rented out what had been her kids bedrooms

I wonder if some incentive to share houses would work-move in with the friend down the street, etc

Has she got over her hero worship of Jeremy yet? Genuinely think some of it is desire to be his anointed successor

He was the leader when she got in, etc etc

The modern meaning of 'cheap' (and its status as an adjective) is explained as a contraction of the phrase 'good cheap' – that is, a good deal. The OED even records a transitional stage from 1479, with the phrase functioning as a comparative adjective: "gode cheper".

Could you get a few more together and invade us again? Brixham's still a nice place to march thru

It's a joke about Your Party having yet another split before they've agreed on a name

It's directly referencing an XKCD comic that someone has linked up thread as well

As few as four?

The name selection vote later is not to pick a name for the main party, but to pick which faction you want to be in.

Last winter I bought, for the first time in ages, two really nice wool jumpers from M&S, our major 'quality' clothes retailer

Went to buy more this year because I could afford, and they're discontinued--it's all 'blend', and I can't wear poly :-(

So disappointing, we really need to turn it around

Yeah, I moved from Devon (lots wool historically) to the edge of the Yorkshire Heavy Woollen district where so much of our production/processing used to be--most of the old mills are housing now

I mean, housing is good but wool just died and it's so hard to buy now

Is your collie part sighthound? I know it's partially a perspective thing but that's a very lurcher face (complimentary)

Pretty much, I think I went in poised to like it because some of the reviews were anti for daft reasons-a long wordy clever joke was replaced by a quick sight based gag? OK, that's fine

But yeah, the budget was visible but it just wasn't quite there, but Americans loved it so new generation of fans

Because film Marvin was better! One of the few bits where I think the film's better than the show, but it was better

Yeah, it didn't get that bad for me but it's always been one of those touchstones "you haven't read it have you" things--I mean, I get the classic movie monster is iconic now but, y'know, the book's a classic

(and I need to actually read my 1819 edition I've only read the other one before)

It's like The Game, the only way to win is not to play

And 25 years after I told people this some of them are still trying to fucking play it
November 29, 2025 at 2:08 PM
That would be my choice, yeah--there are some that let them out the rest of the year as holiday lets, and the torbay economy actually needs that, so they'll be paying the new tourism tax and that'll help

But so many are just empty most of the time--then the fuckers complain the shops have gone
