Since bluesky supports video I thought I would share 2d animation that I did on #b3d #greasepencil back in 2019.
2d hand-drawn animation with grease pencil(back then there was no modifier hah), compositing and video editing are done in Blender. #artpost

What really helped was creating 3D versions of the characters. This made it much easier to get the scale and perspective right in several shots. The first shot, in particular, had tricky foreshortening and slow, subtle movement, which made the animation especially challenging for me.

I gave my best effort with the character designs, but honestly, I haven’t created that many before. Next time, I’ll definitely consider consulting or hiring someone to assist, especially with expression sheets — those were the toughest to keep consistent throughout the short.

Guess what, concept were also done in Blender! I saw a lot of potential in using blender and grease pencil for production. But at the time, not many 2D artists or animators, were working in Blender. So most of the shots ended up being pretty standard 2d shots. #b3d #greasepencil

"Why did you ruin the movie with such a nasty image format?"

It felt exciting at the time, but looking back, one downside was how long production took—by the time I finished, the landscape had already shifted.

Back in 2022, the TikTok/reel format was still pretty new, and not a lot of artists were using it for storytelling or animation.

That’s one of the reasons I went with a vertical reel format for this new project. I knew most people would be watching on their phones, and I also wanted to challenge myself composition-wise to make the most of that frame.

Second, the aspect ratio (2.35:1) I chose ended up being way too small on phones, which made the whole thing hard to watch for general audience.

After finishing the Batman animatic, I walked away with two big lessons. First, it was kind of confusing for an audience—the rough drawings with limited frames didn’t really blend well with the more polished 3D backgrounds.

@moderndayjames was an MVP of this project I don't know if I would have finished it without him
The best part about collaborating with someone is when they elevate your stuff to a place you would not dream on. We knew each other before the project, so it was one of the first people that I approached
