You never did the Kenosha Kid? Sewer socialist, Midwestern nationalist, Gotham denizen, non-Kyle fan

The US federal government is openly warring against its own nonwhite population in a way no one alive has ever experienced. It’s not even getting to hide it. The overt bigotry is comparable to Jim Crow. And our pathetic, cowed, putrid political class just keeps pretending it isn’t even happening.

This. When I was a youngun weighing pursuing a career in journalism I got the clear message that editors and publishers at all but a handful of outlets viewed having values as disqualifying. The view from nowhere (which intrinsically biases outlets toward power) was the only acceptable approach.

Right, although now that their hardest-core readers are networked (and reaching their less media-criticism-happy readers on occasion, whether directly or via other outlets), what happens in Vegas no longer stays in Vegas. WaPo subs are in freefall after Bezos' ratfucking.

I will also say that had I somehow stumbled into an ivy and onto the elite political reporter track at an impressionable age (and there are all kinds of reasons this could not happen) I don't for a minute imagine I wouldn't have disavowed all of my proto-woke values and become one of these monsters

I genuinely think it's fascinating that media companies don't think they'll take a reputational hit by hiring the likes of Lizza and Nuzzi. I admire a lot of the reportage NY Mag produces but I'll never look at it the same way (and yeah, that was before we knew about the felching with subjects)

And she, almost uniquely, faced some real consequences, serving as the Grey Lady's GWOT scapegoat and landing in the wingnut welfare media/thinkfluencer circuit, but she'll never miss a meal.

Never felt better about my career decision to, uh, never break out of the trades and then settle for a content marketing gig.

In seriousness, the serious journalists I know are the best of us and it makes me despise these peacocking political hacks more that they have to be tainted by association

They're rigid conformists who imagine themselves to be rugged individualists and rowdy outlaws. They're just priggish bluenoses with ODD and a closet full of flannels.

I don't play poker -- one of the many ways in which I am not a Real Man-Coded Manny Man -- so for my wife's birthday one year she had the boys around for poker and I wore an apron and served drinks and Chicago thin crust. Fun was had by all. Josh Barro was not and will never be invited.

Interesting people are a land of contrasts. I feel bad for the crashing bores trying to embody the unobtainable monoculture they imagine they need to feel safe.

It's particularly absurd on the heels of the once-seemingly-invincible Cuomo's humiliating dumpster fire flame-out. How do the likes of Schumer, Gillibrand and Jay Jacobs look at the sort of bitter infighting Cuomo relished and go "Yeah, that's the ticket?" Long Island Brain, man, idunno
November 25, 2025 at 4:46 AM
The focus on intraparty factionalism rather than beating the Republicans is very reminiscent of Cuomo's cynical IDC gambit, which slowed movement on a bunch of progressive reforms but ultimately fueled the rise of AOC, Working Families and the NY DSA
