There’s actually a great book on this phenomenon from, believe it or not, 2014. I read it working on my thesis. “The Birth of Korean Cool: How One Nation Is Conquering the World Through Pop Culture” by Euny Hong. Great book with valuable history that sets the stage for what’s happening now
Commentary: K-Pop and Korean entertainment are evolving into a global cultural force, expanding far beyond their local roots by embracing international talent and audiences, while staying true to their Korean identity.
The K in K-Pop is already silent. And that’s OK.
In terms of music consumption, K-Pop is already on that path. Audience data shows that there are now far more fans outside South Korea than at home.

It’s super annoying
It’s wild that right wing grifting is so easy that you can screw up your homework on purpose or tie for 5th place at a swim meet and get a whole ass career out of it

“Ultimately, the collective strategy of AI companies threatens to deskill precisely those people who are essential for society to function(…) automation of knowledge and culture by private companies is a worrying prospect – conjuring dystopian and outright fascistic scenarios.” — @olivia.science
AI Is Hollowing Out Higher Education
Olivia Guest & Iris van Rooij urge teachers and scholars to reject tools that commodify learning, deskill students, and promote illiteracy.

Today I am very cozy doing some reading on my office couch with a candle lit, and doing a little light computer admin stuff to prep for the week.

It’s beautifully sunny out but also cold and windy, contemplating a walk but a little worried about blowing away

This is so cool! Our episode of Whiplash on Medieval Trans and Genderqueer Saints featured here:

Many of us know from firsthand experience how hard the holidays can be for queer and trans people — especially when religion is involved.

Family gatherings can be confusing, exhibiting both love and rejection, acceptance and judgment.

not to be earnest on main, but I am deeply grateful to be on my way to dinner with a family whose Catholicism leads them to love and fight for queer people, for immigrants, for Palestinians, for the unhoused, and for all the marginalized. not every queer person in Trump’s America gets to have that

Queer saints aren’t a modern invention, they’ve always been part of our story. And knowing that can save lives. Medieval scholar @aspencerhall.bsky.social breaks it down on our latest episode:

How do we accompany gender diverse people as Catholics? By meeting them in the example of Jesus. My essay:

A transgender Catholic on what it means for the church to walk with LGBTQ people - Outreach
Pope Leo XIV included a group of transgender people in a special Vatican lunch, the same week U.S. bishops went on the record opposing gender-affirming care.

This would be so great but who can say if it would actually happen haha
I think there's a decent chance that the Pope visits Chicago during this presidency and while there asks to see Broadview and I wonder how that plays out.

Crusaders, knights, and warrior images are the face of a new brand of toxic masculinity. Just look at this example I found on threads—then listen to our podcast episode on Crusadercore to learn more

My thing is that it’s definitely ownership issues -> conflict of interest -> lack of fair and balanced coverage
All jokes aside, this year has been a deeply embarrassing year for the vast majority of those in media & journalism.

Just a bunch of unserious people making a mockery of their profession during a very, very serious time when their work has been desperately needed & missing.

It truly is wild to me how some folks still manage to see VICTIMS of sexual assault / abuse as more of a problem than the perpetrators.

The extreme consequences of a purity culture mindset run rampant.

Emma and I co-wrote this piece looking at using the Virgin Mary within protest art for @sojo.net

Of Course the Virgin Mary Would Trample ICE
Queer Catholic artist Libby Kercher's recent depiction of Mary trampling a serpent labeled ICE emphasizes Mary's role as the patroness of the oppressed.
