(3/3) Importantly, Agnes had to sign the Incorporation’s sederunt book to get the money, leaving not only an elegant signature, suggestive of literacy, but also a evocative and personal connection to her life in the seventeenth-century Scottish capital. #SurgeonsProject

(1/3) On 13th December 1670, a surgeon’s widow, Agnes Urquhart, was given 20 shillings (sterling, rather than Scots) in charity from her late husband’s Incorporation. Intriguingly, this was under condition she, ‘never…truble them again’. #SurgeonsProject

This is a reflex testing hammer used by doctors to test reflexes. Testing for reflexes is an important part of the neurological physical examination in order to detect abnormalities in the central or peripheral nervous system.

It's time for the final #TriviaTuesday of September!
This week we have this instrument from the late 20th century. It is 22.5 cm in length. Any ideas what is is for?
A metal instrument covered in black rubber. It resembles a nail as it is is circular at the top with a long thin point.

Would anyone know where 'Olre' in Holland was/is? John Johnston was master and owner of the Sampson of Olre in Holland, carrying oil, salt, wine, & Spanish money in 1593.
Shipping case noted in TNA SP84/50 f.69, mentions the 'Sampson of Olre'

So Capoelli mentions an Sz Tironian note which means s[ed] - Latin got ‘but’, which in Scots usage means ‘in addition to’. That makes the math and syntax work… Thank you for putting the focus on the Tironian angle - huge help!

Thank you - most reassuring!

Yeah - it’s the tail which makes me worried!
mchapelproject.bsky.social
That’s what I’m thinking - do you think I’m off base with the ampersand? Thank you!
mchapelproject.bsky.social
Problem is the ‘t’ and the math being off by one unit then. Otherwise tame would be good.
mchapelproject.bsky.social
Any thoughts on the possible ampersand and insertion mark @michaelpearce.bsky.social ? Thank you all!
