In some of the later novels there’s an author stand-in character who writes mystery novels about a Finnish detective based in Britain, and she can’t stand her character and admits to doing absolutely no research about Finland.

Poirot and Marple are essentially supporting characters in half the Christie novels and are for the most part blank slates - I think a lot of the characters‘ reputation is down to just how much work Ustinov, Suchet et al did to bring them to life in the screen adaptations

I get that but I feel that while he has less screentime he was far better used? He does have a clear arc in the WUDM that he doesn’t IMO in GO. And tbh I guess I prefer detective stories where the detective ends up being more of a secondary character
