An Abundance of Popularism 🧐

Still waiting for that NYT masthead editorial about how recent election results decisively indicate that the other party is denying political reality at its peril & is distracted from moderate, unifying solutions 🤔

🎯 They and a large swathe of the media need to economy to be terrible & for it still to be Biden/Democrats’ fault. The Narrative™️ cannot fail. It can only be failed.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign.

Five years & thousands of signs later, the Republican Party's collapse into far right authoritarianism has accelerated & only gotten worse, & our media & political system has continued to show itself totally unfit for purpose to deal with this problem.

The ROI since 2022 is even worse. It is possible to both love Bryce & the Phillies & think that paying to get Will Smith or Adley Rutschman is not a good ROI. It's obviously not all Bryce's fault & MLB playoffs are small-sample lotteries so 0 WS wins is almost random, & yet... 🧐 😬🤷‍♂️
December 5, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Again, I love Bryce & he's done great things for the Phillies. But the largest contract ever in MLB history at the time should have yielded something like Ohtani returns, & instead it's yielded Altuve returns since 2019 & Will Smith returns since 2022. It's obviously not entirely his fault, but 🤷‍♂️
December 5, 2025 at 5:01 PM
Look I love Harper as a player. But it's possible to both like him & believe the contract is bad.

The ROI has been meh (WAR since 2019...17th for the most expensive contract ever at that point), & the opportunity cost very high, as we saw again this year with yawning holes in the lineup elsewhere.

We could start just by bringing back shame.

You called for the US military to be set loose on 🇺🇸 citizens.

You called for our NATO allies to sell us their land.

You held up a public servant's nomination so long she died of cancer before taking office.

You're no longer welcome in polite society.

Periodic check-in on UST yields, the exchange rate, etc.

Again, maybe This Time Is Different and dollar/US financial dominance is All Over. But the available data so far continue to not support that argument.

Even the exchange rate level barely suggests anything at all but noise since a year ago.

Like Larry Summers on economic policy & inflation under Biden, Ezra Douthglesias was not correct about the 2024 election or politics in 2025 despite being lauded constantly in the National Conversation™️ as a sage Oracle of The Truth.

Again, any system in which these discrepancies exist simply is not a democracy.

"Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections"

We can't continue like this, where the rules, norms, media coverage, etc. are entirely different for one party than the other.
