In Serbia, women have been involved in all aspects of the student-led anti-corruption movement. But in a deeply patriarchal society, being visible and speaking up means risking gender-based violence ranging from media smear campaigns to revenge porn. My story for @en.afp.com : u.afp.com/SWgD

An interesting case I covered last week: a brand new anonymous X sent manipulated pictures of SNS supporters to people active in the current protest movement in Serbia. The goal seems (to me) to convince them to publish false info to later discredit them. Did it work? Yes.

After promising more crackdowns and calling the protesters "terrorists", Serbian pdt Vučić offered a "dialogue". Meanwhile, his party's supporters are flooding social media with AI-slops and fakes, including a fabricated quote attributed to Novak Đoković. My latest:

Generative AI put confirmation bias on steroids and made propaganda cheaper.
Ruling party networks in Serbia have used an AI-made pic to further the narrative that the students leading an unprecedented protest movement are "traitors" and "oustachis"

Pro-gvt propaganda reaches new lows with this one. Informer TV showed a photo of a student holding a sign saying "death to patriarchy" at a March 8th gathering in Novi Sad, claimed students now blocking RTS call for "the death of the Patriarch"

Another example of gvt spin in #Serbia against the students' protests: minister of defense Bratislav Gašić claimed that protesters in Kruševac showed Nazi symbols. Meanwhile, the photo he showed as proof is of the logo of US punk band Dead Kennedys. #studenti

Tesla recalls all 46,000 of Musk's babies in the US because of a dangerous defect. Meanwhile, Musk on X says trans people should be put in an asylum (which is a vile thing to say). I wonder why he's not telling his millions of followers about the Cybertruck's manufacturing defect. MYSTERY.

How do I cope with the bleakness of the news? Husband and I with the cats watching #Belgrade welcoming students arriving on foot and other people on bicycles and motorbikes from the whole #Serbia ahead of tomorrow's protest

"Western media won't show you this" about the students protests in Serbia is a really ugly and cynical influencer flex and the dispiriting symptom of our collective failure making people's consumption of info healthier and their understanding of social media platforms and their algorithms better

I am expecting in a hopefully not too distant future dissertations on the role of humor (live and online) in the current students protests in Serbia which are challenging Vucic's rule like no other movement to date. Found this one on X following tonight's presidential press conf

Explain to me why I would need an AI to chat in the same place I can chat with actual people, or to do things I can do with real people or with any search engine, like planing an event? Make it stop please 😭

The UN Convention on the Rights of the child guarantees children's right to have and express their opinions, as AFP explains with experts' comments

The follow-up claim by ruling party MP Vladimir Đukanović that "children are the property of the state until they turn 18" was a big blooper. Even Vučić came out to say it's not true and that (!) children have rights guaranteed by international convention and domestic laws

Interestingly, pro-gvt tabloids and media outlets all reported on Vučić's speech at the gvt's meeting, with the exact same headline -- not a quote but a paraphrase -- "Vučić: students have the right to protest, but underaged don't"
December 23, 2024 at 7:19 PM
In reaction to the growing student and pupils protest, Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić claimed in a meeting with the governement that underaged pupils do not have the right to protest - not in Serbia, not anywhere in the world. This is false. AFP factcheck: cinjenice.afp.com/doc.afp.com....

Pro-ruling party tabloid didn't take long to jump on the AI-generated photo to claim that it is "another proof of manipulation from the fake students and the opposition about the massive protest". Generating such images only helps such outlets in misleading people about the protest.
