Yeah, in my experience there is often an unambiguous testing quality/tone to the remarks. Essentially, "Are you one of us?"

Haven't seen the Hobbit trilogy but have seen a clip of that scene and I have to say, the disembodied spirit of Sauron inside the flaming eye is scary as shit. Much scarier than the embodied Dark Lord in armor or the Eye alone (which was at times kind of dorky in the LOTR films).

Based on all the Trump 1 stuff that was saved for books, I'm fairly confident a bunch of lurid details about his health problems are an open secret among the DC press, but we'll only find out how much they knew or suspected once he has a debilitating medical event/dies and the dam breaks.

I've resigned myself to him just asymptotically approaching death for at least a few more years, but maybe we'll get lucky and he'll surprise me.

Part of the problem is that a lot of men do understand, but buy into the system anyway because they hope to someday become one of the patriarchs.

I want Dantean punishments, but I'll settle for Consequences.

Makes me wonder what was different for the boat strike with the survivors who were returned home. Maybe Pete was passed out with a bottle of gin at the time?

There are parts of episodes where the slower pace worked, perhaps unintentionally, to help me feel a sense of time dragging on for Carol, but overall I agree. Definitely want to see where the series goes with the concept but I can tell it's not going to be one I rewatch.

Though I can't prove it, I'm also convinced that following a structured narrative over an extended period of time (even if the story is slop) exercises various elements of cognition in ways that watching a twitch stream does not, and can lead to more coherent thinking. It does for me, at least.

Pluribus is absolutely guilty of this, too! "Bitter slop-artist wishes they were doing serious work" is as much of a stock character as the ones in Carol's books, just coded as higher-brow.
November 29, 2025 at 8:16 PM
Enjoying Pluribus overall, but I found that part faintly ironic because the "silly fans of lowbrow work meet creator who resents them" scene is itself such a cheap cliche and "bitter slop-artist wishes they were doing serious work" is as much of a stock character as the rogues in Carol's novels.

Tearing down the East Wing of the White House was, I'm convinced, primarily an act of precisely this kind of intentional defilement and symbolic destruction.

"What we really want is a funny TV guy dictator who gives us treats!"

I agree prosecution seems implausible now, but depending on just how bad and out of hand this all gets before it's over, that may prove to have been a grave miscalculation.

The year is 2049. A balkanized America is in a state of perpetual conflict. Every conservative region is led by their own bespoke AI generated Trump. Texas Trump wears a bolo tie. Kentucky Trump dresses like Colonel Sanders.

Pumping him full of experimental drugs every time they need him to get out of bed like the sickly Marcus brother from Vampire Hunter D.

"Evil tech bros are stealing the hard work of artists to train AI!"

"So you support the artists you like by buying their work, right?"

"lol fuck no"
November 26, 2025 at 6:32 PM
YouTube keeps trying to feed me AI music in barely related genres that the uploaders are attempting to pass off as genuine, and I've gotta say, I'm not enjoying it. Even when it's flagged as AI it feels on some level inherently deceptive. "Here's this thing I didn't really make."

I've been convinced for a while that a bunch of lurid details about his failing health are an open secret among the DC press, but we won't hear about them for years.
November 26, 2025 at 3:50 PM
Not to worry, if/when Dems regain power, the media will smoothly pivot right back to relentlessly hammering away at shit like this.
November 25, 2025 at 10:03 PM
Right, and the social/interactive component truly turbocharges this process. People aren't just passively mainlining an endless stream of conspiratorial garbage, they're participating in communities where social dynamics reinforce crazy beliefs, introduce them to new ones, etc.

Maria Kiehr comes the closest to what I imagine Luthien sounding like when I read the Silmarillion, but with some inhuman quality to it and a higher range.
