Choked at the breakfast table yesterday as @nytimes.com memory holed one of the biggest protest in US history: peaceful, playful, non-violent, all you could ask for in a protest meant to show people's support for liberal democracy. The NYT gave it tiny coverage on the front page & modest on p.22.

Disappointed to see the @nytimes.com go out of its way to make a molehill out of a mountain with it's below the fold pics and short story on page 22 of yesterday's #NoKings protests across the US. It offers no sense of the scale, significance or the colourful & playful style of the protests.

The Trump regime is speed running the authoritarian playbook of Victor Orban (Hungary), Narendra Modi (India) & Reycep Erdogan (Turkey). If the Paramount SD-Warner Bros & TikTok deals go thru, he will have brought more of the US media under his sway in 10 months than they achieved in 10 years.

It also actually more restrictive in terms of the # of Chinese directors allowed on US TikTok and limits Chinese investment in the US TikTok to 20%. It's an authoritarian+ model of social media ownership and control.

As noted in a previous post, the close ties between the Ellison family, who now control Paramount, and Trump is concerning. Ellison is controlling owner in Oracle, 4th biggest cloud computing service provider, in US & world, & tagged as major beneficiaries if the Tiktok divestiture goes ahead. 6/

I have just done a quick analysis of what the US media landscape would look like should Paramount SD's bid to takeover Warner Bros. Discovery go ahead. Paramount SD's market share would sore from ~10% of the $223B market to 26%. 1/

The # of f/t journalists in Canada lplunged from 10,900 to 9,300 in 2024 (Stats Can). Cuts were widespread but BCE led the way, where journalists were among 4,800 employees cut. Noon newscasts at all CTV stations except Toronto & evening weekend newscasts at all CTV & CTV2 stations were...1/
