Every Friday in October, we invite you to explore the depths of creative horror, from the existential to the bone chillingly supernatural. We’ll draw from several different texts including Stephen King, Agatha Christie, Octavia Butler, and many more.

"I spent hours in my bedroom practicing my banter, explaining the nuance of each of my lines, and making sure to perfect the sullen, distant look in my eyes."

New issue of my favorite writer's advice series is out!

"All my talent is in waiting for small eggs to hatch—
a treasure I cannot touch.
The babies are so translucent you can see their dreams.
Shell-memory; soft belly full of worm.
What's unraveling is my ambition for more."

from THE SCARECROW OF MY FORMER SELF (MoonPath Press)

Day 1 - #SealeyChallenge

@sealeychallenge.bsky.social
Survival Plan

make a scarecrow of self-worth
from bloodied dancing shoes, a mask
and a sea green bathing suit; call it
silly, call it profound, call it regret
learn to dance in the wind despite
all corporeal limitations

so what if the crows ignore you?
this is the daily practice-trade

the desire for a hundred journeys
for bare usefulness, even joy
lean toward the straw gold sun
bow in the snow and rain
send out no invitations, decline
all requests, stay vigilant above
the invisible field where hope grows—
this will be the scarecrow's task

“But music is not an escape
to somewhere else”

A gorgeous poem that holds its own musicality for grief. Love this new one by @susanlleary.bsky.social in Pedestal Magazine.

Have been wanting to place a poem in Pedestal Magazine since I started submitting, so it means a great deal to have “Lilacs, Music, Boy” featured in the newest issue. Big thanks to John Amen and the editorial team for this joy, this kindness!

Lilacs, Music, Boy

Music really does heal all wounds!! I will believe that until the day I die. —BLK,
8/18/2020

I conclude with a sound
that is a boy in a field with his sketch
pad penciling lilacs across
a face. A boy, by his own remedy,
trusting to drown out the warships & human energy. But music is not an escape
to somewhere else—& why this somewhere else is not the real thing when
certainly it is? A garden everywhere
is a slab of concrete. No window
to leap from. No final wind exiting
the body. Those with foresight care little
for the atmosphere & what it listens
to, but as you would, Brother, you attempt
to bandage the sound. You hide, first, the noise from the music then realign the proper sense with the proper task. Death is scarcely viable & time is trembling. So are the lilacs. Maybe now you can go home.

ok here's my dung beetle love poem
Love Poem with Dung Beetle

Dung beetles use the moon to navigate.
They take dung breaks by resting on their dung balls too.

There’s a louse that infects a fish
by becoming its tongue.

We've put enough men on the moon
to populate a church basement's last AA meeting,

but ask a physicist for an equation on bee flight
and the best they'll be able to do is to linger

with you in the middle of a small bridge
and count the creek-caught leaves float by.

The world is loud and fathomable
until it isn't; a mirror

left in the whitest snow reflects a sky so clear
the whitest snow barely looks white at all,

a dog treks across the country to find its master,
a man loses all the color in his irises

after his pupils dilate so wide
because he sees his love walk through the door.

One look, and he knows where to go.
Anything can be the moon.
