One night, as Luke raves over a meal of honey-glazed salmon and roasted potatoes until I’m flushing from all the adoration, he suddenly asks where I always seem to get the motivation to cook like this every day for myself (and him by proxy), and I freeze. At first, I’m hesitant to tell him the truth. Delving into the tragic backstory of how it all started feels a little morbid after the high praise, but Luke seems eager to understand this part of me better, and after the things he opened up to me about, I feel like I owe him that much.

To his credit, Luke listens attentively as I go into detail about the eating disorder that nearly destroyed my early twenties. He almost doesn’t believe me when I tell him I was anorexic until I show him some photos of myself at that time, nothing but skin and bone, gaunt face, pale skin—utterly unrecognizable to the person I am today. I can see the shock give way to sadness as Luke tries to imagine what kind of pain I was in that led to such an outcome.

We hate bullies in this house, but Luke’s gotten better about standing up against his.

“I didn’t know you were the girlfriend in the relationship, Shaw,” he says, folding his arms across his chest, emphasizing how his biceps flex with the motion—like he’s trying to prove how strong he is. “Where’s your frilly dress to go along with that nail polish, princess?”
Now, Frank’s goons—Nick and Henry—let out snickering laughter, and suddenly, I feel like we’re back in high school, gathering to watch a fight in the parking lot after class.
Luke’s face goes flat, and he rolls his eyes, curling his fingers up to admire the shiny black lacquer he’s still wearing from our date. “Still can’t be bothered to come up with unique insults, I see. I’m more offended that you seem to have stopped trying. Did you run out of targets to practice on while I was gone? Or do people still react to this weak material here?”
Frank seems a little stumped for the first time in the conversation, like he wasn’t expecting Luke to clap back so effortlessly. Luke seems to recognize it, too. His lips curl into a gloating smile as he folds his arms across his chest, the motion more bored than intimidating.

You need the context before he makes breakfast for it to be not boring haha. Luke made a comment that told Ethan he found him attractive, and it’s eating away his brain trying to figure out why. 😅

I frown at the awkward tufts of wavy dark brown hair on my head and wonder if it’s time to get a haircut. My eyes are the least exciting shade of brown I’ve seen, so unless Luke likes staring at mud, that can’t be it. Then there’s the scruffy beard on my chin that I haven’t trimmed in a while, making me feel like a drunkard coming off a bender. I rub my hand along my jaw and sigh. Maybe Luke was just being polite.

Rolling my eyes, I groan and shake my head. Who am I kidding? It’s not like it matters if he was lying or not. I am a markedly straight man, and there is no scenario where his opinion of my appearance would change that undeniably important fact.

I try to put it out of my mind as I wash my face and brush my teeth. Then I flick the light off and head downstairs.

After plugging my phone in on the kitchen counter to charge, I make a pot of coffee and start on breakfast, frying up some bacon and eggs, laying it on a slice of avocado toast. It’s not precisely Instagram-worthy, but throw on some hot sauce, cheese, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes, and it’s the most delicious-looking typical millennial breakfast I can make.

I never removed a character but I removed scenes with one or two of them that weren’t adding to the plot to help conserve space. So now there’s significantly less of them on the page, but it doesn’t detract.
