i really hear a lot of messaging to her fans in eldest daughter. like, it could be addressed to a romantic muse, but could also be to legions of young fans who she feels a bit protective of - or at least hopeful that they won’t have to go through all the trials & humiliations she has

yes, guilty as sin is another exemplary sensual song! and dress honestly might be my favourite song on reputation. even “style,” though less personal than those others, has that sensual sound and feel, esp the verses. even tho the characters in the song aren’t doing much, the tension is palpable

but even so! i quite love the melodies on Eldest daughter and it’s far from being a skip for me, even though it’s the biggest lyrical miss (for me personally)

the first eldest daughter verse (“everybody’s so punk on the internet…”) i actually love. i think it works! but she loses me a bit with the bad bitch/savage stuff. i get what she’s going for but i think it does start to skirt a little close to unintended & fairly sensitive connotations

i’ve been hesitant to voice that opinion bc i don’t want to come across as saying Taylor can’t be sensual or that she should write in a certain way. i don’t mean that at all. but i can’t deny i prefer dress or IION to wood

sry i’m jumpin into your guys’ convo but just want to agree - i love taylor’s sensual lyrics on other albums but the cheekiness on the showgirl album comes across as sabrina imitation to me, and is a bit jarring in contrast with Tay’s usual mode, which is, like… extreme earnestness

that said… Wood is saved for me by the infectious hook & neat production touches

i don’t think Wood is the weakest track or the one that painted the biggest target on her back (eldest daughter or cancelled would be my picks for that). But i agree it comes off as imitating Sabrina’s cheekiness and doesn’t do it as well as Sabrina does.

i wonder if there will be any costumes in the stadium!
