The Japanese game development scene might have a major font shakeup in 2026, as FontWorks gradually ceases their LETS game font licensing for companies in Japan:

Quasi-tangent, but I also think it's incumbent upon Japanese translators especially to have that curiosity and be deeply literate in their area of expertise and voraciously consume untranslated stuff as a matter of professional due diligence to fully appreciate what influences the stuff we work on.
I say this even as a J>E translator myself: my relationship to Japanese media got a lot deeper and healthier when I stopped letting Viz and the other big foreign players be my tastemakers. You will feel a lot more seen as a grown adult when you start seeking out seinen and josei stuff, trust me.

I've said it about Japanese games and it's just as true everywhere else: you can never, ever count on localizations to represent the breadth and depth of Japanese media and what comprises the canon as it's natively understood. Curation and commercial interests will always narrow and skew your view.

Also, as someone who worked on HORSES and has also made porn games + comics: I really don't appreciate when people put down one thing I made to uplift the other! Especially considering no one at Santa Ragione *ever* framed it in these terms when we were discussing the Steam ban
I am a little disappointed when the conversation is focused around "it's art not porn!" because the adult games devs get very little support but have been dealing with this for far longer, and they've been sounding the alarm for that deplatforming coming for other games (such as LGBTQ+ content).

In case you missed it, I wrote a tl;dr for my series examining Suikoden 1's English localizations. The final word: the HD Remaster's translation is a definite improvement, but suffers from the same issues as the 1996 translation—namely, a lack of context and not enough editing passes/LQA.

Good job, guys. See if you can't make similar results happen for No Game, No Life and Vinland Saga.

Getting close to time to start asking for the same kind of fervor for AI generated closed captions as well. You can fight this, it CAN work.

The Spanish AI dubs are unchanged.

This piece is fantastic (as is everything Kat writes) but I don't know how to make the studios and the PR groups that represent them understand that their reliance on Twitter and unspoken "requirement" for entertainment journos & critics to use X makes "being harassed" part of our job description.
It has now been a year since I stopped posting on X. For @spitfirenews.com, I wrote about watching the platform I loved become a conduit for the worst extremism I've ever witnessed. I don't regret leaving. In fact, I wish I'd left even earlier.

Youtube comments always help so much, same with likes. It is silly how much better my videos that get a few of each do compared to ones that don't.
PRO TIP

If you have YouTubers you like and follow and watch their videos a lot

leave innane/positive comments on their videos. The algo is all fucked up for YT creators and a lot of videos get sent to the void for whatever reason.

I hate doing it, but I've been trying to do it.

The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.
