one insidious thing about gen AI is it's not just causing us to mistrust dodgy images, it's also making us mistrust images that look perfectly normal. this is gaslighting in a very literal sense bc the technology is undermining the trust we have in our own ability to perceive reality!

I saw a talk by an "AI expert" who claimed he invented new types of statistics with chat gpt.

I'm not a statistician but I am experienced enough with terminology and use. He spoke about stats incoherently. Eg "Cat car run spin jump drink!" - all English words, but nonsense

But the CONFIDENCE...
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

This touches on a few of the biggest sources of low morale for me:

- flood of AI slop lands in my inbox as peer review requests
- my critical reviews of said AI slop are then ignored by editors at Journals that won't give my work consideration
- all while I'm expected to ⬆️ research output
It's easy to see shoddy research as a bad actor problem. But if AI slop like this can make it through editors and peer reviewers, it means there are systemic problems at work. And I'd argue that at least part of the problem is the overwork culture in academia-- pressure to do more while caring less.
"Runctitiononal features"? "Medical fymblal"? "1 Tol Line storee"? This gets worse the longer you look at it. But it's got to be good, because it was published in Nature Scientific Reports last week: www.nature.com/articles/s41... h/t @asa.tsbalans.se

The basic policymaker mental model for climate action assumes:

- maintaining status quo is a win
- we have plenty of time
- electricity is the only source of pollution

All 3 are false, to the benefit of the wealthiest enterprise in human history, at the expense of all life on earth (including us)
Mark Carney has had to 'step forward and backwards and it all sort of cancels out' headspace on climate for quite some time.

It's the logic of carbon offsetting: if you operate a coal plant, but you also build some renewable energy, the latter cancels out the former 🫠

Every political argument now:

Me: What this person is doing is cruel, wasteful and immoral.

Them: You fool, you silly child, don’t you understand this is how the world works and always will?

Me: I don’t believe that and it’s still wrong even if.

Them: I can’t believe you’re so judgmental.

"I will happily make the trip [to meet with Coastal First Nations]."

They have been asking for a meeting for months. Hodgson has not met with them.
David Cochrane asks about the fact that it would’ve been impossible for the coastal First Nations to travel from their communities to meet the feds on the timeline the govt offered.

“It’s called Zoom,” Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson responds.

In the parenting related Facebook groups I am in, people are starting to use AI generated “pic[s] for attention” and I hate it so much. I cringe every time. Just post your words and use a random photo from your roll if you have to. Ughhhhh

Last night's NDP French language debate exposed a party that doesn't seem serious about rebuilding after the departure of Jagmeet Singh

The party's livestrteam links were faulty, and candidates weren't particularly engaging, mainly because the collective level of French was atrocious🧵

I’ve given Carney the benefit of the doubt for the past few months given his credentials on climate before entering politics. But I don’t see the difference between Liberals and Conservatives on this issue anymore. What policies would be different if the Conservatives won?

Man, the NDP are just eternally disappointing
The new Canada-Alberta MOU is a positive step for our energy future.

Meaningful investments in Pathways, clear measures to reduce emissions, and a stronger industrial carbon price give Albertans the certainty we need to move forward. /1

Thank you Steven Guilbeault for being a principled person and for all that you have done and tried to do for environmental and justice causes. Mark Carney has betrayed Canadians in many ways since taking office. He has lost / abandoned his #climate credibility. #cdnpoli

The bots are out here trying to sell us on the idea that somehow Carney is agreeing to a pipeline that will never be built and is therefore somehow a hero.

As if we didn’t watch the Liberals pay billions of public money for a pipeline and jam it through sovereign First Nations.

But it isn't a simple MOU. It also has put out a carveout on CER for Alberta only, delayed our methane regs by 5 years, put in a precedence for ignoring both the Fisheries and the Species at Risk act, and threatens to remove a 55 year old tanker ban on the BC north coast. It's all kinda of... a lot.
