Our statement on the detainment of Austin veteran aboard flotilla from MPT @vanessaforatx.bsky.social and CM's Vasquez, Vela, Laine, @cmzoqadri.bsky.social, and @mikesiegeld7.bsky.social.
We have heard the distressing news that the flotilla bound for Gaza carrying humanitarian aid has been intercepted and those aboard are being unlawfully detained. Among those are Gregory Stoker, a veteran, journalist and Austin resident of District 4. We urge the federal government to take every necessary measure to ensure the protection and safe return of any American detained and that urgently needed aid is able to reach the civilian families suffering in Gaza.

We hope this investigation will be quickly dismissed and we can get on with the important work of our city.

Austin embraces equity as a core value because equity means fairness. We believe in fairness for everyone, regardless of race, gender, or income, and we are proud that our City has prioritized fairness in hiring and contracts.

As a longtime civil rights lawyer, I take an allegation of racial discrimination seriously, but the announced DOJ investigation seems to be very much off the mark.

Austin resident and veteran Greg Stoker is part of a coalition bravely carrying food and supplies to aid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. I proudly join CMs Qadri and Fuentes and Congressman Doggett co-signing a letter demanding his safe passage.
