Perhaps in time, and with games like this, the wounds will heal. One NPC segment I saw treated Samus with all the respect and gravitas they *should* have. She's singlehandedly blown up like four planets and annihilated three dangerous parasitic species at this point, after all.

I do think that may be the thing, though: Games Borderlands 3, and Other have most likely left a lot of "constantly intrusive NPCs and painfully ironic dialog in action games" trauma in people. And the last Metroid game to feature NPCs to this scale, Other M, had them literally holding you back.

That's the weird hypocrisy that everyone has been pointing out, though. At least from one angle: All the processor weirdness trying to smother independent art? Has left the taps wide open for AI generators. Like they're blind to what they're being used for... Or don't actually care.

We do seem to be sort of heading that direction. More and more of the big publishing companies are falling under fewer and fewer banners, and then being suffocated/stripped to deal with all the acquisition debt.

It's theoretically possible to indeed do both. I've seen it be pulled off occasionally, but I suspect it is a difficult road to walk.

There can also be arguments to be made that the current trajectory of spending 1.5-2x the film's actual production budget on relentless advertisement for the biggest studios is ultimately resulting in productions that are just outright doomed from the beginning, I imagine.

Yeah, that's the root of the problem everyone is waking up to. Can't really financially threaten the companies that can, almost literally, flip a switch and say you don't have money anymore. Or rather, what money you *have*, you can't spend it. Anywhere.
