Every time I walk past this bit of fallen tree I can't help imagining it scuttling around, crablike, after sundown, and getting up to no good.

This eerily handlike fallen tree is just over the other side of the cliff in Dorset where I decided Eric and Carl, the main characters in my latest novel, Everything Will Swallow You, lived in an off-white cottage. It's a very folkloric book so on my walks, while I was plotting it out, I was always imagining natural forms coming alive as mythical beasts. However, I didn't want to overdo it, especially as the main character in the book, Carl, is a hyper intelligent semiaquatic being, often mistaken for a dog, who is reincarnated by the sea over and over again, for eternity. So, after making this handlike fallen a tree a character in is own right, I made the harsh decision to edit it out of the final manuscript. When the book was finally released, this September, I was surprised to receive a letter from the tree, addressed to me in beautiful old-fashioned - but strangely crabesque - handwriting, where it told me of the deep hurt it had felt when it found out it had been omitted, especially after it had told all its friends "I'm going to be in a book! Not a really famous or important one by Zadie Smith or Ian McEwan or anything but, y'know, *still*."
