Read 1984 as a teen, found it profound and disturbing but - whew! - just a work of fiction. Fifty years later I reread it before election. Gawd it hit hard. Newspeak, doublespeak, revisionist history, fueling fear, disappearing people, oppressive surveillance. Reread Timothy Snyder - very helpful.

Yes! The irony is sickening. Voight’s playbook defends it - pesky govt union jobs aren’t the right kind of jobs. Goal: Privatize & run roughshod (eg., at-will employment, use contract employees to off-load govt pension & healthcare benefits) - boom nice profit margin. More for me, less for thee.

Similar story here but for Don Quixote. My Spanish is horrible- grammar, pronunciation- Mexican spouse kids me that I sound Russian. But I persist and I’ve found when I am in Mexico people there are forgiving of my odd syntax and accent.

I have a thick book of Steinbeck and other day told myself to dig it out, particularly to reread Grapes of Wrath. Some passages have haunted me through the half century since I first read it.

Yet the White House puts out image of marmalade all decked out in golden papal regalia. This is an admin of cosplayers pumped up on power and malice. The nyah nyah na nyah nyah of it all sickens me. Moving detainees from one jurisdiction to another in a mad game of hopscotch, for example.
