This is an Eastern Cape giant cycad. This specimen at Kew Gardens is the world's oldest potted plant* & it is older than the United States.
I found this oddly comforting? Certain systems seem deeply entrenched & unchangeable but in reality there are houseplants that have been around longer.🧪🌿

This entire thread. Survivor advocates run up against this in our work daily- just imagine being the survivor, the children, those who are in their orbits & don’t understand the massive institutional obstacles. Plus the social stigma.
In 1999, a woman named Jessica Gonzales sought and obtained an order of protection against her physically abusive husband ("AH"), who had repeatedly threatened to kill her and their three children. The order included language specifically limiting when and where AH was allowed to see the children.

Visually stunning, sometimes as hard to follow as a litter of kittens as a catnip convention, hard to love but you linger longer than you expect. Teetered between magical realism and emotional fatalism. In the end, glad I watched it, need to lean more on the source material.
