Hello new folks! I'm an allied health professional - an orthoptist, the profession you've never heard of until you need our help 😂 Think of me as like an eye physiotherapist - 'Orthoptist' = 'straight eyes'! We diagnose/treat eye movement and depth perception problems in neuro conditions & childhood

I have a huge backlog of field notes to type up 😴 Just feel like I have so much academic admin rn #academicsky

Mooncake is yum! When I worked in Glasgow we had a colleague who used to bring back pfefferneusen from Germany after Christmas - huge incentive to be back in the office after hogmanay 😂

I preferred UK system where you cost + overheads and the funder pays 80%. It was clear and you knew exactly how much money you were working with! I mean we all still moaned about the 30% overhead but at least the math was simple.

Oh yeah, indirects are a source of disgruntlement in every institution I've been in. The issue in Australia is that the funding for salaries is more like 60% FEC and the disparity increases further when you're trying to hire clinicians. I hate costings gymnastics.

I generally keep my thoughts to myself on social media a lot more than I used to... but I just wanted to put that somewhere as a reminder to myself about that experience.

Multiple times recently I've felt a bit uncomfortable in the presence of brash people who clearly move in very different worlds to me, where movement of large amounts of money happens over dinner with important people. The disconnect is very apparent when you're not in the room where it happens.
mporthoptics.bsky.social
Except most funders don't cover overheads so your uni make you do bizarre costings gymnastics 🙃

I do this a lot!

Written something already and need to structure? Try reverse outlining. Again with scapple, its brilliant to see underlying logic and gaps in argument.

Anything else LLMs promise to help with let me know and ill try to suggest an alternative.
Reverse Outlines
My favourite revision strategy is the reverse outline. Simply stated, a reverse outline is an outline that we create from an existing text; rather than turning an outline into a text, we are turnin…

One of my old bosses said to me years ago "Make sure you always cost in some admin help for your project" - I didn't for this project cos it felt shitty costing one day a fortnight for somebody, but man, I sure feel the regret some days.

The mute/unmute button was also a rocker button for volume, it turned out! No input button to get back to HDMI, needed pointing at a menu for that! Need an instruction manual for smart TV remotes these days 😅 My TV at home is like 10 years old, I am not up on these newfangled ones lol
mporthoptics.bsky.social
I am a supposedly tech-savvy academic but I needed a room full of retirement village residents to tell me how to operate their TV I was presenting on 😂 I accidentally changed channels instead of turning up the volume on the remote so they could listen to pterry! We got there... 🫣

Ergh, I feel very seen 🫣 (good luck!)

Today is definitely one of those 'halp?' moments...

I really enjoyed the peer review I did last night actually. Sometimes it takes me ages and is not that enjoyable cos the paper probably shouldn't have gone out to review. But this was a really thoughtful study and it was nice to see new work happening in the space! #AcademicSky
mporthoptics.bsky.social
That's the way the world goes round 😂 Do we ever learn? We're academics, of course we don't!
mporthoptics.bsky.social
Ah but if you forget that there is always conference freebies! 😜
mporthoptics.bsky.social

mporthoptics.bsky.social
Ach it's the same over here, we spent 3 weeks in Japan and my partner was doing mad lesson prep yesterday 😂 You'll get it done! 💪
mporthoptics.bsky.social

So my dad had a urology procedure recently and I was worried he was gonna be stuck with a catheter permanently, but he's been so on top of everything (pee admin we call it 😂) and he totally nailed the trial without it! So proud of him and he's even got pelvic physio organised 🤗 go dad!!

Buuuuut I also handled the Pentax k-f and it reminded me how much I love the Pentax colour profile. The Pentax KP is still a beast of a camera for its size and maybe I could get a second hand one for a decent price these days. But then it's already 5 years old model and no USB C. Ahhhh decisions 🥲
