Connect 4 Multiplication

I think someone must have done this before as it’s such a simple and versatile activity for your learners to pick up and play. An instant hit with the class #playinupperprimary

Quite happy with how this turned out! When you need a wee session on times table revision but want to keep it fairly light - get outside and get some leaves! 🍁

I doubt there is a better exercise you can do in a maths lesson than this one. The discussion is amazing.

“I started by making the 5 on a dice”
“I can see a triangular number”
“I took the 3 on the left to make a 3x3 array”
“I counted a line of 3 & two lines of 4”
“It’s 5+6”

Spelling Consolidation ✏️

A great one to play with your whole class or in smaller groups to revise previous weeks spelling pattern(s)

This is a must for any upper primary class (or S1 class) exploring pattern and sequences.

This square is amazing - everytime I think I've found all the patterns, another one appears!

Loved these Anemometers created by the kids today as they learned about Da Vinci and investigated air resistance #stem #playinupperprimary

Outdoor learning today. Pairs, take turns to run to collect digit stone. Create 5/6/7 digit number, circle the largest/smallest. @mr-minchin.bsky.social
A chalk place value grid drawn in chalk on a tarmac floor. Stones above each column. A set of 5 stones with digits 75420 written on them. 83,691 and 75,420 written on the floor in chalk.

You never stop learning and trying new things - looking to develop oracy in the classroom.

This wee, paired discussion starter, recap previous weeks learning, aims to give a scaffold to help pupils navigate their chat

Get the maths outside - whilst the weather is holding out! 🏈

This’ll be the third year I’ve gone running ‘fall football’ with an upper primary class and it’s such a great opportunity to extend learning across a term and offer lots of opportunities for consolidation and depth!

I adore K’nex but this much cheaper alternative has a huge amount of scope for block play and exploration of structure #playinupperprimary

Thank you @mr-minchin.bsky.social for this idea. It was very interesting watching the way they sorted them!

Oh love to see this, thanks for sharing!

I was delighted when a pair of mine did the times table stick method of ‘half of 30 is 15, then double 3 is 6 etc’

4 super simple maths games 🙌

Love these as they all transition from one to the other - and they also involve all learners being active and participating throughout #playinupperprimary

Magical scenes as the class created their own outdoor theatre yesterday, before performing small group improvisations around single word prompts #playfullearning 🍂

Number Shuttles 🏃🏻‍♂️🏃🏿

This has gone down well in every class I’ve taught, from P3 to S3 football training.

3 (or four) players and three cones. Shout a number and they have to run to create it. For example: 8 = 3 + 3 + 2

2,3,4 or 5 - outdoor mental agility

4 players: chalk lines, a cone & tennis ball. Each player assigned a number (2,3,4 or 5). A calculation is called out & the correct answer must balance the cone on their head, the tennis ball is passed to the back & then looped to the front.
