The more I think about it, the more this seems like a last minute reaction to the teen takeover panic than any long term concern about the market itself.

The market was too crowded, but of all the remedies, from new or additional locations to a less severe capacity reduction, this is the most inept. And the timing, given. this issue was known all year, makes me suspect it's a panic over "teen takeovers" instead of a thought out solution.

Maybe (yet more "teen takeover" panic, despite years of a heavy security presence) though the Mayor is taking the hit, so it may be his office.

Nope the downtown one. The wrigleyville one has different limits & may benefit.

Given there's now a Wrigleyville branch (which I only learned of today) why not a second downtown? Or at least take steps to inform folks to limit disappointment & lines. They had an entire year after last year's crowds and chose the path of looking the worst.

The Washington era was an anamoly in some ways - he had to be very good to make any difference given the level of obstruction, but since then the story has been "the mayor or some trusted advisor or council ally beinf a feckless, vain asshole made things pointlessly worse".

Worse if you read it after reading about Harold Washington - a decent politician with decent politics who, despite getting thwarted at every turn, managed to improve the city with more equity & left behind ideas that informed the decent polices of far worse electeds for at least two decades.
