I'm so glad that these movies got restored. They're excellent and deserve to be rediscovered.
Moody and jazzy and offbeat, with confident visual storytelling and wildly varying tonal/genre shifts that are handled perfectly. My kind of shit.

The Stairway to the Distant Past (1995)
The second entry in the Maiku Hama trilogy, now in color.
And HOLY SHIT.
This one starts off as a light comedic romp with our eccentric private eye, and then it spirals into a feverishly strange nightmare descent into the traumas of post-occupation Japan.

The Most Terrible Time in My Life (1994)
What an absolute treat. A stylish, silly, and extremely violent love-letter to the Japanese New Wave.
The first of the Maiku Hama trilogy. Going to need to watch them all now.

The Killer (1989)
John Woo: "what if the assassin from Le Samourai was played by Chow Yun-fat and he was literally the coolest guy ever and he was extremely good at guns and also the lead detective chasing him down wanted to become his best friend"
me: "hell yeah, brother, fuck yeah"

Rouge (1987)
a tragedy in the form of ghost story, serving as a warning about romanticizing the past
Anita Mui is heartbreaking in her role as a ghost returning to Hong Kong 50 years after her death, looking for her lost lover that didn't cross over with her

Only the River Flows (2023)
gotta love a police procedural that takes a left turn at "detective slowly loses his mind over an unsolvable case and the film itself unravels with him"
also, bonus points for being shot on 16mm and emulating the look of a 90s film to match the time period/setting

it's a slow burn, surreal crime thriller set in post-bubble Japan about a "professional stand-in" who will be whoever you need him to be, and the tragic client that pulls him into a murder plot

A Night in Nude (1993)
oh yeah, now that's a top shelf neo-noir
grimy, dreamlike, sad, and phenomenally shot

nothing quite like the intimacy of huddling together on an engine that's balancing on a pair of wheels going high speed, nothing keeping you in place and totally exposed to the wind, with the looming threat of a horrifying wreck happening at any moment

watching His Motorbike, Her Island (1986) only confirmed my belief that motorcycles are the most romantic vehicle you can possibly put on film

one of my favorite little visual jokes from this movie is the fake video game that the scalper tries to grab the remaining stock of (but fails)
FIBER EMBALM

I love how the Return to Silent Hill teaser looks like an advertisement for a horror franchise branded theme park attraction
THIS JANUARY, RETURN TO SILENT HILL...
AT HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS AT UNIVERSAL STUDIOS IN ORLANDO!

6. Homunculus
One of the few horror manga to legitimately disturb me, and I find it VERY difficult to recommend to others
A man willingly undergoes trepanation, gains the ability to visualize other people's traumas, and spirals into vortex of self-destruction in his quest to "cure" them

It's a psychedelic sci-fi detective-thriller with shades of Pynchon, Le Guin, and P.K. Dick, with beautiful art and some of the most inventive panel layout I've seen in awhile

I just learned about Absolute Martian Manhunter, and holy shit it absolutely whips
it re-envisions the character as a FBI agent who has become entangled with an alien consciousness, and can now perceive other people's thoughts, feelings, and memories like a form of synesthesia
