Australia smoothes out much of the radical fringes by fining anyone who does not at least turn up at each election to get their name crossed off as having participated. The less passionate centre of the electorate usually carries the day, without extremes gaining significant power.

Couldn't any individual state get rid of Citizens United by passing a law stating that the powers of any corporation doing business in their state excludes any power to contribute to any election or donate to any political activities? (I saw Robert Reich write about this, that states set powers)
