How they have to drag me back to work after a four-day weekend.

Happy Monday, life is better outdoors!

For Antarctica Day I, a random moron, wants to point out that it's a special place with cool wildlife, an active volcano, sciencey things with kickass names like Dark Sector Lab and BICEP, and dedicated people from many countries doing important work.
And we'll lose it if humans don't shape up.

Before the night emerges, our Paranal Observatory glows in the colourful light of the Chilean sunset 🤩

The atmospheric phenomenon known as Venus belt is also visible.

ngVLA will be a big increase in capability, but I doubt it will have the unique visual charm of JVLA.
Heads up, astronomy fans! You can spot the NSF Very Large Array in the brand-new Apple TV+ series ‘Pluribus.’ Our giant dishes aren’t just background scenery, but actually play into - and kick off - the show’s main storyline! 📡 #Pluribus #VeryLargeArray

What does the fox say?🦊

Today, we’re showing off our favorite pictures of culpeo foxes we’ve spotted around Cerro Pachón, home of NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory. 📸

💡Fun fact: While these little guys look like foxes (and are called foxes), they’re actually more closely related to wolves and jackals!🔭

The night sky is not the only marvel of the Atacama Desert.

One example? The Licancabur volcano, one of the great gatekeepers of ALMA. 5920 m high, it‘s part of a chain of mountains that separate Chile and Bolivia 🌋

1/ A telescope fist bump in the sky 🤜 🤛

Our Unit Telescopes combine their light with interferometry to obtain the level of detail of a huge 130 m virtual telescope. But this requires correcting the effects of Earth’s atmosphere. This is where the lasers come in.

Hard to believe it's already been 2 years since the ngVLA prototype antenna was first unveiled at mtex in Germany!

Since then, the panels have been installed, the dish lifted onto its pedestal, and the antenna was officially handed over to the NRAO.

Hypnotising view of Paranal!

Yet the sky is not revolving around the tip of an Auxiliary Telescope. The illusion is caused by the alignment with the southern celestial pole, around which stars seem to trail due to Earth's rotation.
