The mempool continues to be almost empty. The UTXO set peaked at 188M around Christmas and continues to trend down since. It has now fallen below 180M.

Next block: 1.02 ṩ/vB+

Looks like Runes have crossed their zenith.
The proportion of blockspace used by Runes went from over 30% to low single digits since mid December.

The mempool cleared several times in the past 24h, but now users caught on and added more transactions to the 1–2 ṩ/vB band. The mempool clearing is accompanied by the UTXO set receding a bit: we are below 181M from 186M UTXOs at the start of the year.
This year so far, the UTXO set has shrunk from over 186M UTXOs to under 181M. The mempool cleared several times in the last 24h.

Last night, the mempool shrunk to a depth of less than four blocks worth of unconfirmed transactions before it bounced back. It seems that we will soon see non-full blocks.

Last night around 1 AM, there were only 3.58 MvB of transactions waiting for confirmation. This low point is followed by the mempool growing to over 20 MvB by 10 AM.

It cannot get much cheaper: 57,801 ṩ for 57,794 vbytes is 1.00012112 ṩ/vB.
Block 881550 contained a transaction paying 1.00 ṩ/vB. In detail, the transaction paid 57,801 sats for 57,794 vbytes, which is just a hint more than the minimum transaction relay feerate.

The mempool has come down from over 105 blocks worth of transactions in the 1–2 ṩ/vB band to less than 16 blocks.

If you had been waiting for low feerates to consolidate a lot of DCA outputs or move your wallet to a more blockspace efficient output format, now’s a good time!

The mempool visualization from mempool.space shows that the transaction data waiting for inclusion in the Bitcoin blockchain has been trending down towards the mempool clearing altogether since Christmas.

The mempool has not fully cleared since April 2023, but since Xmas,transactions bidding 2 ṩ/vB or more cleared several times and the network has been slowly chipping away at the 1–2 ṩ/vB band. E.g., block 879,439 yesterday contained txs with an effective feerate of 1.08 ṩ/vB.

Over Christmas, the drop in blockspace demand has caused the Bitcoin network to start confirming transactions paying less than 2 ṩ/vB. The 1–2 ṩ/vB-band has shrunk from 92 blocks to 72 blocks depth.

Next block: 1.42 ṩ/vB+

The mempool visualizer on mempool.space shows that the feerates in Bitcoin’s transaction queue have fallen below 2 ṩ/vB over Christmas. The projection of upcoming blocks shows the next block containing transactions paying less than 2 ṩ/vB.

Lopp sacrificed a chunk of time to engage with Softwar, first analyzing ten hours of podcast, then reading the entire thesis.
He calls Lowery’s thesis "a giant non sequitur".

Personally, I’d recommend "Resistance Money" instead.
Jameson Lopp concludes after listening to ten hours of podcasts that he disagrees with most of the points of Softwar, is skeptical of some others and only agrees with the claim that governments should hold bitcoin as a hedge. Especially he disagrees about the claim that PoW creates a new domain of non-lethal warfare that will displace kinetic warfare.

I also found this paper from 2021, which concludes that Bitcoin has a wealth distribution similar to Australia, with a significantly lower Gini coefficient than the Unites States, and higher market capitalization correlated with fairer distribution of wealth.

The conclusion from the paper "Characterizing Wealth Inequality in Cryptocurrencies: "the current Gini value for Bitcoin, of 0.65 is similar to that of Australia (Suisse, 2018)[…] the current Gini value of the United States at 0.85" Also from the conclusion: "Cryptocurrencies with higher market capitalization (Bitcoin and Ethereum) tended to have a fairer distribution of wealth"

Craig Wright was found in contempt of the prior ruling that forbade him from claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto.
BitMEX Research reporting that Judge Mellor finds Craig Wright in contempt in each of the five grounds, to a criminal standard, beyond any reasonable doubt.

You are jesting, but you can actually already pay some taxes in some states with Bitcoin.

In a new first for bitcoin adoption by governments, Colorado has officially become the first U.S. state to allow citizens to pay taxes in bitcoin (BTC). This policy took effect on September 1, 2022, claiming that moving forward, all state taxpayers will be allowed to use cryptocurrency to pay a wide variety of different types of taxes, specifically including “individual income tax, business income tax, sales and use tax, withholding tax, severance tax and excise fuel tax.” The notice also states that, although cryptocurrencies will be legal tender for the payment of these taxes, the state will only issue refunds in U.S. dollars.
