Stephen Ellis has written brilliantly about them in other contexts, but whatever presence these societies have in Congo is vestigial. The New Yorker should be ashamed of itself but from Phil Gourevitch’s Duranty-esque reporting from Rwanda on it is clearly uninterested in getting the story right.
