The artist was named for American naturalist and ethnographer C. Hart Merriam, a friend of his father. His Blackfoot name, Nitoh Mahkwii (Lone Wolf) was given to him by a Blackfoot great uncle. See the oil painting now on display in our Shifting Life Zones exhibition through April 2026.

Sosi black-on-white pottery in our Babbitt Gallery. Made around A.D. 1000–1130, this type of pottery features bold black designs painted on a white surface. Common in the Tusayan region, it reflects a shared tradition found across the western Ancestral Puebloan world. #pottery #indigenouscultures

"Hopi Old Butterfly Dance" by Otis Polelonema (1902-1981)
Born in Shungopovi on Hopi Second Mesa, Otis Polelonema carried the Hopi name Lomadamocvia, meaning “springtime.” He studied at the Santa Fe Indian School alongside other pioneering Native artists such as Fred Kabotie.

Dancers have Hopi kilts, red sash across their chests as worn in wuwuchim ceremony, yellow horizontal marks on chests, and eagle wish feathers (nakskwosis) in their hair. Women wear black dress kilts, and like the Buffalo maidens, a horn and feather fan headdress. The main colors are a red-orange, green, black, white, yellow. The background is a light tan.
