I experienced an anti-Arab hate incident on the steps of City Hall in San Francisco today; during the Board of Supervisors meeting in which Arab American Heritage Month was recognized.

I’m sharing my experience & recommendations on what to do if this happens to you.

Video: Part 1 of 2 🧵

IOWA: I headed back to Wisconsin through my 33rd state: Iowa.

From there, I departed from Illinois and returned to San Francisco earlier this week.

MINNESOTA: Most people are surprised to learn that I was born in Rochester, Minnesota.

My father’s first professional job in this country was at the “Big Blue” IBM in Rochester, launching my family’s early immigrant life in America.

I returned to MN to visit after 8 years.

WISCONSIN: I visited my relatives on my way to and back from Minnesota and stopped off in both Milwaukee and Madison along the way, taking different routes to see as much of the state as possible.

ILLINOIS: I came to Chicago to see “Paradise Lost” by Raqib Shaw at the .

The painting is a journey through the artist’s life & is an unfinished work that he began in 2009.

The piece is anchored in Kashmir, one of the most militarized places on earth.

ILLINOIS: The trip began with a train ride from Detroit to Chicago where I spent 36 hours decompressing after four packed days at ArabCon which took place in Dearborn, Michigan.

I returned to many places that I visited 8 years ago when I drove across the country in my move from DC to SF.

I noticed and learned many things this time that I do not remember from that first epic roadtrip:

The grassroots energy behind Saikat in his race for Congress was palpable in today’s crowd:

“Saikat! Saikat! Saikat!”

His campaign’s message & platform has connected with San Franciscans of all backgrounds.

No AIPAC money. No corporate or lobbyist money.

I'm running for Congress to represent the people of San Francisco, not big donors.

This is how genocide is aided and abetted. If we didn’t understand it before Gaza, we understand it now.

Those who let this happen will not get away with it.

All of this has happened and not enough people have spoken up or even acknowledged Gaza in any meaningful way in these two painful years. Because of fear of what they may lose in their privileged lives as Gazans have literally lost everything.

This is how it happens.

Making California the 1st state to censor education within the context of criticism of Israel.

California’s shameless legislature made it possible with some claiming, as some of the most privileged & empowered people in the state, they felt bullied & powerless to stop the bill.
nadiarahman.bsky.social
The education system in Gaza has been destroyed by Israel, but politicians here have worked overtime to pass censorship in public schools so that kids cannot learn about the atrocities Israel has committed.

California’s shameless governor Newsom signed AB 715 into law today…

The mainstream media use inaccurate terms and framing to make these actions seem justified.

They refuse to publish pieces that challenge Zionist framing and lies. And they refuse to cover their own colleagues assassinations.
nadiarahman.bsky.social
We’ve witnessed the most journalists killed in any conflict in modern history yet the media refuses to use accurate terminology to describe Israel’s incessant bombing, starvation & destruction of a captive civilian population as the genocide it is.
nadiarahman.bsky.social
We’ve seen Palestinians starved, shot, bombed, crushed, blown to bits by a genocidal foreign government — yet U.S. officials still worship like imbeciles at the altar of the Israeli state; taking free trips & pledging fealty to a country committing genocide & practicing apartheid.
nadiarahman.bsky.social
Two full years since the beginning of the live streamed Israeli genocide that has killed or wounded hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and completely obliterated Gaza, one of the most densely populated places on earth.

Jones, Friedman and Maher are all genocide enablers and that will be their legacies. They are all on the wrong side of history.

Hate mongers and imperial supremacists parading around as intellectuals whose warped and shameful perspectives carry any meaningful weight. 🤡

As Israel continues the genocidal onslaught, Van Jones just blamed Iran/Qatar “disinformation” for why the world has turned on Israel — and ignores Bibi’s recent admission they plan to take over and weaponize TikTok themselves.

Grateful to the entire ADC National team for their hard work on this event and for inviting me to be an active contributor to ArabCon’s social media content this year.

Looking forward to next year.

Each time, I learn so much, make new connections, and most importantly, am reminded of how disconnected the political bubble I inhabit is from morals, justice & ethics when it comes to the Arab American community & Palestine. I am also reminded that this community has my back.

Another amazing ArabCon in the books!

Last year, I attended on a whim and it turned out to be such a fruitful decision that has expanded my network, knowledge base, and personal capacity for courage in speaking out. #ArabCon2025

The welcome reception of American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC)’s ArabCon2025 kicked off last night in Dearborn, Michigan and included a film screening of Watermelon Pictures documentary film The Encampments and a panel discussion including activist Mahmoud Khalil. #ArabCon2025
